Hello!

I am looking for pictures, available on the Internet, of Pope Benedict XVI, before he became Pope, from two specific eras.
  1. While Vatican II was in session, which was from 1962-1965.
  2. From 1965-1972.
If anybody out there can help me, please post the link or links here in this thread.
Thank you!

I think that this picture is from 1972, isn’t it? I recall seeing it in a book that said it was from some German conference in 1972.

You may just be right considering my source for the photo.

But, I seem to remember seeing this photo somewhere else and I thought it also claimed it was taken during VII. But, I can’t seem to remember right now where else I may have seen it.

I seem to recall seeing a picture of then-Father Ratzinger taken during Vatican II. He was in a clerical collar. Does anybody know where I can find it?

Also, I am still looking for pictures from both categories mentioned in the original post.

Thank you!

Anything yet from 1965-1972?(especially of then-Father Ratzinger wearing a clerical collar?

Thank you!

I have never seen a picture of Fr. Ratzinger in a clerical collar from this time period. I do not believe he typically wore one. I would be very presently surprised if I am proven wrong on this with a picture.

I found this several months ago:

“One day, I met Ratzinger outside of class, because two Dominican theologians from the United States needed a translator. Wanting to make a good impression, I dressed up in my best suit, which was a black one. As a result, Ratzinger addressed me as “Father.” When I explained that I was a layperson, he pointed to my black suit, because at German universities priests did not wear clerical collars but regular black suits.”

How sad that some Priests do not want to dress as Priests.

DISCLAIMER: These postings about then-Father Ratzinger should not be thought of as taking anything away from his many good accomplishments.

Just for the record, secular priests in Germany have not worn clerical dress in public in many decades. Many European countries and even Mexico had anti-clerical periods in which they passed laws forbidding such dress. I know how strange this sounds to Americans (it still sounds strange to me even though I have known about it for many years), but it goes along with the widespread and gratuitous suppression of monasteries, not by a revolting selfish autocrat like Henry VIII in the 16th century, but by so-called liberal governments in the 19th and even early 20th.

No one has said that Priests in Germany do not want to dress as Priests. What has been said is that Priests at German universities wear a black suit and don’t wear a clerical collar. No one has said why, nor has anyone provided evidence that it’s because they don’t want to dress as Priests.

In fact, it looks like they DO want to dress as Priests, it’s just that the attire is different for Priests teaching at German universities. As the poster above me points out there could be a wide variety of reasons why, including secular law.
