Pictures of home altars/prayer spaces?

dang i can not find any pics of my home altar, its small, has a crystal cross, two holy candles (you know the ones with images of saints on them idk what they are really called) on either side of the cross, on the left side is my bible on the right is my '62 latin missal, right behind the cross is my bottle of Holy Water, and behind that are about eight candles that i have already burned all the way out.

oh does anyone know where i might find incense to burn, and what do they call it a thurbule or censor or something?

The traditional incense that is used in the Roman Rite is frankincense based, often with some oil of rose added. There are several church supply places that sell this incense in a one pound box - this is about a 5-10 year supply if you use it a few times a week. This incense is used with a charcoal disc. The charcoal is lit and when fully ashed over it is ready for the incense which is placed on (more smokey) or beside the charcoal.

But some restraint is in order. Even a small church is larger (especially taller) than a typical home, so a little goes a long way. Ideally you want to be able to buy an ounce or two of a couple or three different types. If you seek out the nearest Roman Catholic or Orthodox church supply business you will find what you are looking for.

The charcoal discs made for incense are often the ‘easy lighting’ type. These do a lot of hissing and spiting and make a lot of sulfur smelling smoke, so light outdoors in a fire-safe area and then bring into the house.

You can fashion a simple bowl to burn this type incense from aluminum kitchen foil folded several layers thick. The charcoal burns very hot, so place the container on a heat resistant and stable surface.

The use of incense in prayer is a very old and wonderful devotion. The smell of the church incense evokes many wonderful memories of worship.

to answer your question about the altar cards; I bought them on Ebay, cost me about $60. I was tempted to go into debt on my VISA card and buy a really expensive set from one of the Ebay sellers. (they usually have a fair selection if you’ve got the bucks)

Indeed! I nearly smoked myself out of my house the first time I tried. :eek: After that experience, I decided that stick incense was safer. You can find them in most of the traditional ‘flavors’.
 
I got the somalian frankincense. It said it had a pine-ish scent to it which my family enjoys so I went with that. Will let you know how it is when it arrives. 🙂

Thank you! The crucifix is 11" by 7" and is mounted on a larger cross. Your altar is very nice:).

i just added a crucifix above my altar and an icon of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane above the crucifix. im trying to get a picture of it from my phone to my computer so i can show yall

That cracked me up! I like a little humor and I do know what you mean. You pray in bed, at the sink and in your car.

This makes me think of a guy on the forums one time who was observing others on a thread debating heatedly on some subject and then he posted. He had a picture of Doc Holiday from Tombstone played by Val Kilmer and under it, it said: “I’ll be your huckleberry”. lol

I say the Rosary in my bed sitting up. I have 3 pictures of the Blessed Mother leaning against a pillow that I look at while I’m saying my prayers. My favorite is this one, Our Lady of the Angels:

On the subject of home altars, has anyone built their own prie dieu? (kneeler as shown in the large home altar above)

I visited your blog & wanted to say I really enjoyed it! I am in RCIA currently & can see that I am only just beginning to glimpse this Church. Your description of th feast day of the innocents was great! Love all the pictures!🙂
