I have never seen them leave any of the chalices at the Altar, unless there was no distribution of the Chalice at all. Otherwise, all of the Chalices consecrated at the Altar are used in the distribution.
Ah, I see. So, then the priest commingles a piece in his own chalice, and that chalice gets handed to an EMHC (assuming no Deacon or concelebrant present)?

It’s required, yes, but it doesn’t invalidate the sacrament if it’s not done. I would guess you’re just missing it when it occurs after the fraction, but it might be worth asking your priest about.
I’m going to watch closely this week and, if it appears he doesn’t, I will ask him. Thank you.

Some priests leave a chalice at the altar. (Personal usage chalice). Other priests hand the chalice to be used by a EMHC. Personal preference.
As the EMHC is never to take from the altar, but rather to receive his chalice or ciborium from the priest, the choice is the priests.

CCC 1377
Christ is present at the moment of consecration. {In both species (Water & Wine}.
So in essence if you take the Eucharist and not the wine your sould will be fed. It is not as though you only 'half feed your sould. For instance some Parishioners cannot take the wine due to health issues. Likewise if you are allergic to Wheat you only take the wine.
So in essence if you take one or the other. You are taking the whole. Body and Blood. You can witness this as some will Genuflect with their arms crossed. In which as an EMHC you would bestow a blessing.

I did find in a book ’ The order of the Mass". The Priest is to say inaudibly, “May this mingling of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it.” Typically they will take the host and make the sign of the cross over the chalice.
My personal experience, I have never been to a Mass that this was not done.

Or, as is the case in my parish, one of our priests commingles the host into* each *of the 6 chalices.

Yeah… one of those people would be me. I became Catholic just 4 years ago now and I had no idea that the priest puts a piece of the host in one of the chalices.

So, one time I go to take a drink and see a piece floating in the chalice! I thought to myself “eeeww someone backwashed…”

See, this is one thing that I wish RCIA did better about, well at least my RCIA didn’t do, is explain the symbolism behind everything that’s happening.

I know our priest never says that, so maybe he doesn’t do it.
