To our Muslim members:
Why the Prohibition against pork and ham?

Why the Prohibition against pork and ham?
It is simple! God forbid it.

145-Say, “I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine – for indeed, it is impure – or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.” Al-An’am(6)

173- He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Al-Baqarah(2)

115- He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] – then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. An-Nahl(16)

If you ask why God had forbidden it? There are some interpretations but God knows the best.

It’s part of the Shariah food laws. The Qur’an forbids it, as brother/sister hasantas has shown. There are some other restrictions; for example, we’re not allowed to eat blood or drink alchohol.

I wonder if alcohol to Muslims is the equivalent of artificial birth control to Catholics. Because many Muslims I know actually do imbibe, some openly some not. Anyone know if that’s actually been polled?

This question should not be directed to the Muslims, but to the Jews. The prohibition on pork is Old Testament.

I think the proper question is why Christians think it is OK to eat pork.

Take a look at Deuteronomy, Chapter 14:8-10, which very explicitly forbids eating (and even touching!) pigs. “You shall neither eat of their flesh nor touch their carcass.” It seems that G_d was VERY clear in this instruction. I have never been able to understand which of the Laws Jesus fulfilled and which of the Laws still bind us after His fulfillment thereof. Who gets to pick and chose which Laws still are in effect?

Yes Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and so taught about it so people would get a clearer understanding of what is important here for us about the laws we must follow. As a Christian we follow Jesus Christ’s teaching on the matter for He is the Master!

Matthew 15:11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them."

12Then the disciples came to Him and said, “Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended” when they heard this? 13 But Jesus replied, “Every plant that My Heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by its roots. 14Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”…

So Jesus taught us here that how we treat people is more important than the rituals that people clung to in the OT which took them away from knowing God as He really is… A loving and merciful God. The OT was good to keep the Jews on the straight an narrow course and to bring them faith, but really they didn’t know the mercy of God through Jesus Christ. That’s the point that Jesus was making.

The ten commandments are very important to a Christian, but we don’t make golden calves or idols of clay like the people of the OT… But yet it says not to do these things in the OT. What matters is the spirit of the law. Ie’. to Honor God before all else. see?

Noted that this thread is directed to Muslims but while we are at it, the issue of ritual is quite relevant.

What is the significant of prohibition of eating pork?

Would it be as significant as circumcision for example, the latter being a sign of the covenant between God and Abraham?

One aspect is that pig meat was easily contaminated and tainted. Many of the Mosaic food laws eg shellfish were for safety in a travelling community in a hot climate. Food poisoning was a terrible risk

To this day, people of my generation know to cook pork and bacon thoroughly. Never rare pork as that was how we were taught as it was a risk

To this day also while I fed raw chicken and meat to my pets,I would not feed raw pork or pork bones…

You beat me to it.
For the Jews in ancient Israel, the dietary laws in Leviticus equal healthy eating. Something that is often overlooked.
God always does things for a reason, not just ‘because I said so’.

👍

And that of course is the prefect answer to the gay lobby quoting dietary Levitiucus laws when they atack the sexual prohibitions … all of these are there for the HEALTH, social as well as physical, of the Jews…

Jesus abolished many as they were no longer relevant

all of which should teach us re blind obedience

Well you got me there I was replying to another post and swayed off of the original question. The question about the pork seems to me that what it was written about in Leviticus was a dietary restriction because pork was seen as unclean but then it became a spiritual ritual of the faithful. I see the relationship where what is good spiritually is also good for us physically. To tell you the truth, I don’t like pork that much, In fact I couldn’t even smell it when I was pregnant…lol Actually I’m fast becoming a vegetarian because it’s good for us and good for our planet. As for circumcision, many believe that it helps keep that area clean and so have it done for hygenic reasons. That remains controversial, but I do know that circumcision out of necessity later in life can be terrible to go through. I hope that’s where you were going on this…🤷

Dietary laws were also intended to separate his people culturally from their surrounding pagan neighbors. Jews have similar restrictions, so I don’t look at Muslims oddly for having similar restrictions.

To echo some previous posters - it’s basic desert/extreme hot climate survival. Basically the same for the Jewish concept of “kosher” - when you look at what’s being done; they are essentially rules for basic desert survival (health and sanitary survival) which were codified into religious laws so that people would be required to adhere to them (and survive).

Chicken will go bad just as fast as pork, and the refrigerator wasn’t invented right after Paul had his vision.

And this applies too to the sexual and social taboos. A peripatetic nation needs strict rules to ensure social integrity and survival.

What is happening today in society shows this clearly

Questioning this .
