Pilate’s cooperation in the Crucifixion. How would you classify it?

Material (remote, proximate/immediate)
Formal (implicit, explicit)

I don’t know that it was ‘co-operation’ at all. ‘Co-operation’, to my mind, presumes that someone other than Pilate was the principal agent in Jesus’ death. I think the Jews were the principal instigators of it, the ones who most desired it, but Pilate gave the order and his soldiers did the deed, so it would seem that he was the principal agent.

Assuming he wasn’t, though - it sounds like a classic case of implicit formal co-operation. He denied sharing the intent of the Jews in killing Jesus, however he participated in it directly, by giving the order without which it couldn’t have happened. (This is why the Jews came to him in the first place - it was illegal for them to kill someone themselves).

And participated in it freely enough, I think. True, the Jews were restless and vocal, but he had successfully crushed Jewish rebellion before, so I don’t know that he would have been scared enough of them for it to really reduce his moral agency that much.

You know, I’ve always wondered if God had mercy on Pilate at his particular judgment due to the fact that Pilate tried to defend Jesus at His trial?

God has mercy on everyone - but God is also just.

We don’t know the precise state of Pilate’s soul at his death.

Indeed, there is an apocryphal text called the ‘Acts of Pilate’ which suggests that he converted to Christianity after Jesus’ death. What a shining victory for Christ if that were so!

I believe that Pilates wife abandoned him immediately after JESUS death, as he promised her that as a result of her dreams about JESUS the night before, that he would not kill JESUS, but he did indeed order JESUS death. His wife went and joined the Holy Women that followed JESUS before HIS death, as she was converted.
I also believe I read that Pilate was exiled by the Romans to an island due to his poor leadership and governing, and while on that island killed himself, which was the same fate as Judas.

Apparently the Abyssinian Church considers both Pontius Pilate and his wife, Claudia Procula, to be saints:
New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia:
The tendency, already discernible in the canonical Gospels, to lay stress on the efforts of Pilate to acquit Christ, and thus pass as lenient a judgment as possible upon his crime, goes further in the apocryphal Gospels and led in later years to the claim that he actually became a Christian. The Abyssinian Church reckons him as a saint, and assigns 25 June to him and to Claudia Procula, his wife. The belief that she became a Christian goes back to the second century, and may be found in Origen (Hom., in Mat., xxxv). The Greek Church assigns her a feast on 27 October. Tertullian and Justin Martyr both speak of a report on the Crucifixion (not extant) sent in by Pilate to Tiberius, from which idea a large amount of apocryphal literature originated. Some of these were Christian in origin (Gospel of Nicodemus), others came from the heathen, but these have all perished.

Pilate had authority to decide if Jesus was crucified or not, and so his role was not cooperation, but perpetration. He chose to hand Jesus over to those who demanded His crucifixion, and his Roman soldiers carried out the crucifixion itself.

THREAD DRIFT

It is interesting to ask who is the free one here; Pilate or Jesus.

Pilate has complete authority over the area and all in it. He wants to set Jesus free.

Jesus is bound and friendless. He wants to do His Father’s Will.

Who is the free man who does what he wants?
