Pilgrimage to Guadelupe

Has anyone here made a pilgrimage to Mexico City to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadelupe?

I’m considering travelling there for a couple days in May, but I’m not sure how good such an idea it is. Money isn’t an issue, but I guess I am concerned about travelling to Mexico (where I can’t speak Spanish) alone. I would like to travel somewhere like Lourdes, or Fatima, or even Knock, but travelling overseas is when money gets tight right now. Maybe in the future!

Didn’t know if anybody here had experiences to share of a pilgrimage to Guadelupe, or elsewhere…

I went to Guadelupe many years ago, but I went with a tour group, and our guide spoke Spanish. We didn’t have any trouble getting around there at that time, and the people there were very friendly. Good luck, and please say a prayer for me if you do go down there.

Have not yet made this trip, but I have travelled some in Mexico, and there is no way I would travel there again without being part of an organized tour or pilgrimage, or with friends who live there or know the area well. It is simply to dangerous to go wandering around Mexico alone, and do not under any circumstances drive there, you are asking for trouble.

I was afraid of this! I was planning on flying down, but travelling solo gringo (lol) seemed as if it would play agianst me - especially in regards to language and other factors!

I’ll definitely reconsider my options…

We travelled there several years ago with my wife’s relatives who live in Mexico. It was moving, to see the actual image on the tilma.

I do have to admit that it’s kind of strange to view the tilma, several hundred years old, while standing on a moving walkway in a modern church.

Don’t miss the other churches on the grounds. The paintings are beautiful. I wish one of the churches was lighted better, though.

I am excited for you.
my hubby and i are going to the yucatan at the end of the month.
Reading about Mexico City and the high crime rate I would be a bit scared too.
I have been reading about history of the yucatan region and the info is very condesending in every way of the concouring evil church that destroyed the indiginous people. I almost had the idea that the people didn’t really like The Church.
It is the bias writters that have an agenda who don’t like The Church. I went to a spanish site that was translated and their perspective was. The churches were translated as “sacred sites”.
I can’t wait to step into a church that was built in the 1500’s. I can’t wait to worship in mass with these sisters and brothers.
I would love to go on pilgramage, at best, my experiance will be my husband tolorateing me. Poor guy, I started looking at what catholic meant because it was a part of his upbringing, and being in love with the guy I wanted to know. Well, seek the truth,and you will find it. He now has a Catholic wife.

I do hope that you will take very seriously the problems of a car. The problem of laungage barrior, and traveling without a organised group. I really believe that it would be very dangerous. esp in Mexico City. Please start going to the library and looking uo tour books on Mexico. Just take as a grain of salt that they might be Catholic bashing. I am writting to the publisher about it. Yes, in a loving, considerate way. Yes when I can do that…

Would it be possible for you to get a group together for a tour. Other members of your parish or even people from neighboring parishes may be interested in going on a tour like this.

I hadn’t really…since I’m a neophyte and don’t know everyone so well. But it’s an option, I think!!!

Have been, with friends that live there.

That said, I would NEVER go alone. The people drive CRAZY (I mean like, 5 cars side by side in a 3 lane road kind of crazy) and the opportunity for theft is huge.

Most locals don’t speak any English, and if you are a girl(?) thinking of traveling alone to Mexico, just STOP THINKING RIGHT NOW.

That said, It was particularly moving experience, especially seeing women in traditional dress, on their knees moving toward the basilica, rosaries in hand. If you can get in with a group, I would go.
