How does one know if they’re actually from God or just vain imaginations of the mind? Especially those that lead to tears.

False delusions or consoling thoughts from God?

Do they lead you to become more Christlike in your behaviors, or do they by catharsis allow you to continue in habitual sin unabated? Trust the former, challenge the latter.

Do they judge others, or yourself?

If they judge others, I’d guess they are more likely to come from ego than from God, compared to if they open realizations about yourself.

If such thoughts make you humble, contrite, and resolved to do better, then they come from God. If they make you feel proud or self-important, etc., then they are vain imaginations of the mind. If when you cry you are crying over how your sins have offended God, then your tears are from God. God bless you.
