looking for loopholes in the Canon Law to engage in other recreational activities that are against the nature of fasting, then what’s the point of fasting for 12 hours?
That logic would be airtight…if its premise were correct. I’m not looking for loopholes. I was searching for the answer, and I found it: smoking tobacco is not covered under the Eucharistic fast. And, I was assured of what I already know, that smoking tobacco also is not inherently sinful.
Fasting is a time of meditation, prayer, and self-reflection

Most any solitary pipe smoker will tell you this is exactly in line with what happens. And to borrow another G.K. Chesterton quote, “You cannot smoke a cigar while you pray. You can, however, pray while you smoke a cigar.”

Right. I said I was gonna stop participating.

Now I really will, I swear this was the last post defending it!

Time to hit the mute button on this whole business. I can’t say I’m interested in people’s personal biases against smoking, which is what this has turned into. (I’m not even gonna touch the “eating until midnight on Fat Tuesday” point.) A general problem with this whole forum is that many people don’t, or won’t, accept that their opinion is simply an opinion and not Church law or a moral imperative. One can only assume they simply must feel that they are being holier than everyone else.

It’s been fun reminiscing about the nice smell of pipe tobacoo with everyone though 🙂 Reminds me of my dad.

P.S. The Catholic Gentleman logo is pretty cool if you’re a pipe smoker

People can fail in the spirit of fasting just as easily by being overly restrictive as by being overly permissive. (Granted, today we do not see the former as often as the latter!)

It is imprudent to tell other people how they should fast beyond the rules set up by the Church, unless you are their lawful superior or trained spiritual advisor. Peer pressure can hurt souls.

Oh, love their logo, and their site too! They’ve got some really good content there
