Is it true that we, as Catholics, don’t have to believe Fatima and other private revelation?

Interesting. Then what’s the point of the Church even acknowledging it? Shouldn’t they really just say PR is fine but keep it between you and God. I suppose we just need to know it’s legit to have a PR otherwise we’d be discounting that fact that God is sovereign and if He wants to communicate with someone directly that’s His prerogative to do so.

Other than Fatima, what PRs are out there that are generally followed by Catholics? I guess I never thought about what the OP brings up and makes wonder now what things I subscribe to that were PRs not official teaching.

Christ is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. There is no need of further revelation after Him. That is why private revelation is not binding on Christians. There are some private revelations, like Fatima, which bishops have judged worthy of belief, but none are of the same level as Christ’s Gospel.

The approved apparitions “merit belief” and are important to respect even if we may choose not to follow or believe it.

In this respect, let us listen once again to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Throughout the ages, there have been so-called ‘private’ revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church… It is not their role to complete Christ’s definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history” (No. 67). This clarifies two things:
  1. The authority of private revelations is essentially different from that of the definitive public Revelation. The latter demands faith; in it in fact God himself speaks to us through human words and the mediation of the living community of the Church. Faith in God and in his word is different from any other human faith, trust or opinion. The certainty that it is God who is speaking gives me the assurance that I am in touch with truth itself. It gives me a certitude which is beyond verification by any human way of knowing. It is the certitude upon which I build my life and to which I entrust myself in dying.
  1. Private revelation is a help to this faith, and shows its credibility precisely by leading me back to the definitive public Revelation.
The above certainly discusses and defines this discussion much better than I ever could.

So many people have been helped say by pilgrimage to Lourdes. If it helps some people, that’s great. It’s just NOT a requirement…

Its in no way required. But with so many miracles attached to Lourdes and Fatima and other appearances of Our Lady, why would someone choose to not believe in them?

God communicates with people all the time. He’s the God who is always there, always present, always active.

Sometimes He does so in a way that is almost public eg. Lourdes, Fatima etc.

As someone else pointed out, the primary deposit of faith is Jesus Christ.

But the take my old (protestant) pastor had on the apparitions of Mary was “I think they’re a judgment on a divided church” and “There’s been a lot of them”.

By sending Mary God is giving us warnings and all the rest, but also judging us by our response. If we choose to ignore her, we also pretty much demonstrate we don’t care about being a unified Church.

Hi paulbright,

You were asking about other revelations. The following are Marian revelations. I will list them here for you:

Juan Diego/Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531.

Catherine Laboure and Rue du Bac in France and Our Lady and the creating of the Miraculous Medal, in 1830.

La Salette in France in 1846.

Knock in Ireland in 1879.

Lastly, the Divine Mercy where Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in Poland in the 1930’s.
