We seem to have underrated Cardinal Pascelli’s influence in the affairs of the Vatican State, limiting his responsibility for the Holocaust, as Pope PIUS XII, we need to give him a fairer hearing.
We must also understand the World War I conflict did not end at the Armistice 1918 nor did the treaty of Versailles promote a just peace, because the unfair Reparations Germany had to pay, in 1919, were a unifying grievance to all Germans, Pius XI warned the powers that be that the situation in the Saarland would become a threat to peace in 1923.

Cardinal Pascelli was real mover and shaker in Pius XI ministry he was behind Mitt Brennegen Sorge (With Burning Anxiety) an encyclical to German Catholics distributed discreetly and read at all masses on Palm Sunday 1937.

I have also got newspaper articles on the migration of Jews after 1934 where Hitler made a speech where he said that he would not be happy until every singl Jew was dead, so we knew in Europe that this was no secret, but an open policy.

I have included an interesting newspaper article, the Times September 20 1934 (There is no news like old News)

We have an account of how the Protestant churches are being played off against a state sanctioned “Bishop” who wants to achieve what Bismarck failed to do in 1872, by enacting laws that
  1. forbid the Church to intervene in affairs of State,
  2. forbid the clergy to discuss politics from the pulpit
  3. exclude the Church from the State education system
This is brought about by a culture/belief (Kulturkampf) clash the Pope (Pius IX)in defense of the Church against Liberalism published “Pastor Aeternus” this is expressed as “Papal Infallablity” in which as “Shepherd and Teacher of All Christians”, enjoys infallability in defining doctrine on faith and morals. His definitions are “unalterable in themselves and not by virtue of the assent of the Church”.

Pius IX had to make this definition because the rise in New Sciences, Eugenics, Psychology, Communismn and also liberal Catholic Scholars, Pius X, Pius XI, Pius XII all struggled to convey the dangers of Nationalism, but Pius XII also had first hand experience of the Spanish Civil War, Italy’s Fascists, and was a war time Pope until the 1950’s because of the Communists in Eastern Europe

There is also an interesting article on this page about a Lake that disappeared.

Who are you referring to as the “we” that has not given him a farer hearing? Certainly, the Catholic Church has evaluated his life as meritorious and that’s why we have:

Thanks for the link! I’m always happy to see yet more great things about Pius XII. While I am still a protestant, I agree that Pius XII was one of the great popes of the last few centuries and get riled up when I hear lies about “Hitler’s Pope”

Hi Brian

The political restrictions placed upon the Papacy since PIUS IX is not well known.
I myself was particularly vexed by JPII silence over the East Timor oppression of Christians by the Indonesian Government.

I would like to praise Pius XII for the way he as Secretary of State to Pius IX and Papal Nuncio to Berlin got to grips with the Nazi regime, they knew him well enough to know that on his election to the Papacy he would be the wrong choice for them.

On the other side I recognise that Baron Ernst von Weizsäcker was a positive help to as Ambassador to the Holy See not many people know that Pius’s sister could have been killed had she been at home one day when two hungry stormtroopers knocked at her her door killing the man who answered the door then helping themselvers to food.
