It’s often called Romano, or by the brand name Locatelli. It’s sherper than Parmesan.I don’t know what pecorino tastes like.

I have heard the same thing many times. The one thing that I never find outside of N.Y. is olive oil on a pizza. Good pies had to be made with some olive oil. I remember as a kid eating a slice and when you folded it to you could handle the slice (big slices!) it would drip an orange oil, probably the olive oil mixing with the tomato sauce (or gravy as real Italians call it). Everyone I know remembers wearing jeans and holding a pizza on your lap as mom or dad drove home from Papa Gelosi’s, You’d get out of the car and your legs where you had the pie in your lap, would be orange. Aahhh the memories !!!People in New York claim it’s the water that makes the crust good. Same with bagels.
I’m not sure how true it is.
Am going to visit some buddies in Cedar Grove and Ho Ho Kus in April. Am going to try to find a great N.Y. pizzeria and will buy three extra large pies, seal them in plastic, and bring them back to Pittsburgh. Then will freeze them and whenever I need a slice, nuke one or two and pop the top on a cold brew. Even a reheated N.Y. slice has to be better than Domino’s. Anyone care to join in???Must have pizzaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Now.
Beards will help protect your clothing, but people will wonder if you have dyed it.Yes. That orange’ish juice is the oil mixing with the sauce. You must have agility when eating the pizza or you WILL have a reddish stain on your clothes.
Not mine.Beards will help protect your clothing, but people will wonder if you have dyed it.
The Burgh has great everything. Right now the big thing is Paczki, lemon, cherry, and blueberry pastries that are big before Lent out here. The other thing about this area is all the radio stations broadcast the best Friday fish frys in Lent. All the Catholic Churches and a lot of firehouses do fund raisers and the radio stations have a contest for which fish fry is the most popular every week. I’ll say one thing, Pittsburgh is not shy about its Roman Catholic identity. A refreshing change from much of the rest of America.I thought Pittsburgh had decent pirogis. . .Don’t forget to hit Philly on your way home and get some cheese steaks, soft pretzels, and Italian water ice.
Umm, soft pretzels. When I was a kid in the 60s they cost a nickel, they were the size of an adult’s hand, and had big old salt crystals on top. So good!
