The problem with this discussion is you are only talking about half the equation. The husband is suppose to be the head and he is suppose to love his wife as Christ loved the Church. Think of everything Christ has given up and done for the Church. Think of how much he provides for us and comforts us.

When you have someone that puts your wants and needs first, provides for you and loves you enough to die for you to keep you save arguing about “submission” becomes petty.

The relationship Peter describes is natural. When a man truly loves a woman he’ll hang the moon and stars for her, and is very protective of her. When a woman loves a man she knows he’ll watch out for her, respect her and listen to her so she doesn’t mind letting him take the lead.

If you want to break this down to biology: I know my husband will be better at killing the bear that tries to attack us. I know my husband doesn’t want the bear to hurt me. So when my husband tells me to hide under a rock while he deals with the bear I’m not going to say “Now honey, let’s talk this through and make the decision together.”

I know it sounds silly but it is how our brains work. I think this is partly what the other poster was alluding to when they made the comment about the husband’s make the major decisions.

Peter isn’t talking about power struggles over who should do the dishes. He’s talking about something much deeper.
Not my point at all. Even if being submissive to your husband was a good thing, people STILL would not do it because in this generation they are being told not to submit to anybody, but to be able to do your own thing. Law in different than realtionships though, lol. Women these days don’t see a reason to be submissive to their husbands, even if being told its a good thing.

You really think your generation is being told to rebel from authority more than the kids of the 60s and 70s? Every generation thinks they are the biggest, baddest rebels.

Wait for your friends to grow up and get into mature relationships, you might be surprised at what happens.

And it’s not even just feminism. The Protestant revolt, the so-called Enlightenment, all have had serious problems with authority and the further away the philosophes, et al, got away from the Church, the more they emphasized the importance of freedom from external control, freedom to do *whatever *they want. So this tendency to reject submission is not just on the part of women, not just a result of feminism, but has been a ever-increasing tendency for the past several centuries.

That is very true…

Kat127, you said:

I agree with the first part of what you said it sounds reasonable. The second part, however, doesn’t make any sense to me. What does my husbands physical strength have to do with him being more reasonable than me? I realize you are using a silly scenario to make a point but my issue with a lot of the posts is that people are getting to carried away with all of this leadership submission stuff. It should rarely be an issue. I think some people over romanticize certain ideals. 🤷

I made the second point to illustrate why sometimes there needs to be a leader in the decision making process. I have some friends that believe all decisions should be made jointly, I don’t think this is always possible. This was how I explained to them I trusted my husband’s judgment in such situations. It doesn’t have to be about physical strength it just was what popped into my head.

I might not have explained my reasoning as well as I should have since no one had made the argument my friends usually raise. Sorry for any confusion.

You’re right. In the non-denominational and even some of the mainline churches, if the committee leading the parish doesn’t like the pastor, they just can him and find someone else, whom they choose themselves. They don’t submit to their pastor if they don’t want to, and even if they did, he doesn’t submit to anyone else.

Kat127, No problem… I understand your point now. 🙂

Well i would never submit to anybody who doesn’t give me the light of day. I feel bad for women who feel they have to ‘submit’ to their husbands even though their husbands treat them badly. Or even men who feel they have to submit to their controlling wives. It needs to be equal, however if two are submissive or the two are controlling, conflict will arise even more.
