I am new to the Catholic Church and I am starting RCIA tomorrow! I am so excited!

Anyway I had a question that came up today at work. I am training as a pharmacy tech. and a pharmacist called from another pharmacy to say she was sending a patient over to pick up her Rx at our pharmacy because they didn’'t have it in stock. That Rx was Plan B! Thankfully the patient never came in but now I am not sure how I am to handle this in the future!? Anyone have any help?

I would alert your pharmacist that you are not comfortable dispensing such a drug and if it comes up in the future and they know a drug is being dispensed, then hopefully they can take care of it. Most of the time, I believe you aren’t aware of the drug being given and I would say then your conscience is free because you are not purposefully dispensing such a drug. It’s not fair to assume or guess if it is Plan B even if its a presciption from Planned Parenthood. Unless you have full knowledge that these are pills like Plan B or other birth control, than I do not believe you are morally culpable if you give someone a perscription and you suspect it to be BC or Plan B. I just hope that Pharmacists are given conscience clauses because the idea that they are just conduits between patients and doctors and that they shouldnt exercise their personal moral beliefs is wrong and unconsitutional.

There are various laws in some states that may help you here.

You may also want to look into a Pharmacist Association that may help you communicate your reservations to your employer.

First you should discuss this calmly with your supervisor.

Then do a little research to help you bolster you posistion - in case your supervisor or fellow workers give you a hard time over it.

In general, they should re-assign the filling of these controversial pharmaceuticals to someone that doesn’t have your reservations.
  • And keep it as discrete as possible from the patients and other employees.
good luck

I’m not American and maybe you are talking about something local to the USA but what is RX and Plan B?

RX is a prescription medicine
Plan B is the brand name of a pill is designed to induce abortion.
