Hello All,

I’ve been using Catholic Answers for a while now, without an account haha. Since I wanted to ask a question I felt like it was time for me to actually make an account. Any how…

My question is: There is much discussion over Plan-B being considered a form of chemical abortion rather than contraception. So with that being said, if a man, in his younger years, were to buy Plan-B for his girlfriend would that constitute a participation in abortion? Furthermore, if he participated in this during his younger years and it was actually considered abortion, would that merit a Canonical Impediment to reception of Holy Orders if he decided to pursue the priesthood? Thanks so much.

First off, as you know, single people are called to Chastity.

We do not believe in sex outside of marriage, as Catholics

If this young man desires to pursue the priesthood, he should start to discipline himself and conform to what the Catholic Church holds dear.

If this man, now older, is now reflecting on his actions in his younger years, and wishes to enter the priesthood, he should, like all of us, attend the Sacrament of Reconcilliation, confess the sins of his youth.

And then seek out his vocations director and start pursuing the discernment of the priesthood

🙂

It could be either, technically. If conception occurs or has occurred, it may inhibit implantation by its alteration of the endometrium (this is statistically possible, but it also seems pretty unlikely). If implantation has occurred, it does not induce any sort of abortion. It’s primary purpose is inhibiting ovulation and sperm transport.

NO. Buying “plan B” is not a procured abortion.

Okay, thank you. I was discussing this last night with someone and we were unsure if it was considered a “procured abortion”. I guess I’m not too familiar with that specific terminology, could you define a procured abortion?

could you define a procured abortion?
You are pregnant, you know you are pregnant, you intentionally procure a direct abortion via a medical abortion (RU486) or via a surgical
abortion procedure. You are the woman,
or a direct accomplice.

And, if any of canon 1323 applies, there is no excommunication attached.

I suppose my question would be even if he directed procured an abortion for his girlfriend, would that really bar him from the priesthood? Some priests have quite colorful pasts. Even the grave sin of procuring an abortion can be forgiven. 🤔

Google the name of your Diocese + “Vocations Director”. Call him and speak to him.

These types of questions are for the persons in charge of entry to the Seminary or Religious Life.

Best to ask them, as we really have no clue.

The Brothers and Priests on here might.

We don’t want to give this fella the wrong information and have him think its going to be a no to becoming a Priest.

And honesty is one requirement, so kudos for being open and honest

Canon 1041.4 - participating in a procured abortion creates an impediment to holy orders.

The impediment can be dispensed by the Apostolic See. (Canon 1047).

Anyone discerning a vocation should talk to the vocations director about possible impediments.
Thank you!

During the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis extended to all priests permission to forgive the sin of abortion. Do you know if that applies even to the situation we are discussing in this thread?

Please be more specific. What situation are you referring to?
Someone being barred from holy orders because they procured an abortion.

Not “barred”. An dispensable impediment reserved to the Apostolic See.

And no, the pope gave faculties for the priest in confession to address the excommunication delicts of canon law. This has nothing to do with the canons relates to ordination.

So then what would you say if it was said that the person had no idea that plan-B was considered abortion? Rather they just thought it was simply contraception? That seems to me that it would fall under Canon 1323 /2.

At the very least plan B would be considered birth control.
Which we know is only allowed for medical purposes
