Group calls for ban on flame retardant chemicals in Vermont

MONTPELIER - A group of consumer advocates, firefighters and Planned Parenthood are proposing a ban on flame-retardant chemicals that they say are dangerous to human health and the environment.
Charity Carbine, environmental health advocate with the Vermont Public Interest Research Group, says some flame retardants that have been used in televisions, commercial furniture and mattresses have been connected to serious health hazards. She says safer alternatives are available and says the chemicals - known as Penta, Octa and Deca - should be prohibited.
They are so concerned with human welfare.Penta and Octa are no longer made while Deca is still used. A spokesman for the manufacturer of Deca says the product has undergone a thorough evaluation.
