The article kind of makes it sound like he’s giving that out as a penance in the confessional. It may be a little unorthodox, but who knows, maybe a lot of his parishioners are confessing littering? Okay, it’s a stretch.

The article does say that the way to forgiveness of sins is by planting trees. Perhaps it’s the writer’s lack of knowledge in the sacrament.

Since God did create everything including the enviorment we should take care of it not only for our sakes but for our fellow humans.it Brazil is in desperate need and enviorment can be destroyed if the trees aren’t maintained I guess oneyou could make the case that its sin not to plant.

…" a local priest has begun telling churchgoers that the only way to get square with the man upstairs and cleanse themselves of sin isn’t through prayer, but by getting their hands dirty planting trees."

I’m all for protecting the environment, but…🤷
From reading the article, though it is not clearly spelt out, I understand that the tree planting is the expiation of sin, the final part of confession.
After absolution, the final process of the Sacrament of Penance requires the sinner to “make satisfaction for” his/her sins. This may involve a fast, charity work, devotional exercises, etc. Usually, however, it involves saying a number of prayers like ‘Our Father’ and the ‘Hail Mary’. The priest therefore has a choice. In this case he chose tree planting. To me, this is perfectly in order.
