I’m trying my hand at growing some herbs. I bought 2 kinds of oregano, one basil and 3 aloe plants. So far, so good.

Anyone else have herbs growing? The aloe I got for summer sunburns. —KCT

DH and I have a 15 year old aloe plant in our backyard (my parents gave it to me when I moved out), and I just LOVE whackin’ an arm off of Mr. Aloe when we get any kind of burn. Fresh aloe is so much better for your skin than the stuff in bottles at the store. 👍

As for the herbs, I can’t seem to grow mine from seed very well. Did you get a small plant or just the seed?

I have basil, parsley, cilantro and either sage or thyme (I can’t remember and the children “helped” me plant it, so the marker is gone, too, lol). I also have lettuce (we had some of it for dinner tonight) and broccoli and some green pepper plants and tomato plants, egg plants and green beans–everything is in containers and most from seeds. It’s fun to look out on the deck and in the yard and see things growing. Our backyard is too shady for a real garden so I have to use containers in the sunniest locations and occasionally move things around for the best light.

I don’t know if you know this or not, but when the basil flowers, you need to pinch the flowers off or the the basil will die. At least mine does if I don’t pinch off the buds. I usually do it before they actually flower.

Does anyone know if you have to do the same thing with cilantro? My cilantro was growing like crazy, but it died after it flowered out.

yes, pinch off the blooms or it will go to seed and then be done growing. I’m currently fighting my cilantro as well, lol. It wants to bloom very badly…😛

Cilantro from seeds outside - and they’re growing like crazy. Thanks for the tip on pinching off the buds. They haven’t started yet.

Or you just let the cilantro go to seed, and you’ll have more next year! Plus, the seed (coriander) is really good with some coconut milk and Thai green curry paste for Thai chicken.

The best way to keep the basil happy and growing is to periodically chop off about a third of the plant and make pesto!

I have a big garden. Oregano, basil, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, squash, zucchini, all kinds of peppers, a meyer lemon tree, and MY OLIVE TREE HAS OLIVES THIS YEAR!!! YEAY!!! We are in the midst of a big drought here in Alabama, so I’ve been saving the bath water to water my plants. I have to say, they are doing better this year than ever!

I did read about pinching flowers off the basil. Thanks for the reminder.

I’d love to have a big garden, but I know I won’t take care of it. A few pots on the deck is all I want now 🙂 . —KCT

If you have a cat, you may try planting some catgrass or catnip. Gives kitty an alternative to the plants you don’t want him nibbling! I’m also a huge fan of mint. Easy to grow and tasty to use!!
