Hi There

I’m very new to this site so aplogies if I’m asking the question in the wrong thead subject so to speak.
Can someone please tell me the essential difference is ethical viewpoints between Plato and Joesph Fletcher, when it comes to the topic of homosexuality.I’m very confused as from what I have read Plato was homosexual but then frowned own homosexualtiy, is that correct? As far as the Catholic church goes, how do Plato and Flethchers ethical teaching compare? I’m confused when I read that the Catholic church doesn’t condone homosexuality, just the act? What does that mean. Is that because of the natural law? So is Plato or Fletcher more in line with what the Catholic Church believes.

If could help clear this up I would really appreciate it.

Thanks:)

Sorry, I don’t know enough about those people to write anything about their views or ethics, but I can help with this particular question. Most scientists and the Church belief sexual orientation is not deliberately chosen. It comes from a mixture of genes, environment where the person grew up, and their culture.

However, acting on those homosexual feelings is definitely sinful. This is because we believe as Catholics that sexual acts can only be performed in a marriage between a man and a woman for both improving their love for each other and creating new human life. Since homosexual acts cannot result in new life, they are disordered. Thus, homosexuals are called to live a life of celibacy.

Haven’t read Plato and know nothing about Fletcher. However, A man or a woman who are validly married in the eyes of the Church are the only ones who can engage in any sexual act and that is only in the act which would result in children. They are not allowed to engage in any other sexual acts, nor to fantasize about them. And single people may not engage in any sexual activity, nor fantisize about it or think about or desire anything which might lead to such activity or which might stimulate them sexually in any way. There is no small matter where sex is concerned. Any willful pleasure of the sexual appetite is a mortal sin for the unmarried.
