I was away from the church for many years, and in the interim had a civil marriage. It is platonic, i.e., we are not having sexual relations. How does this affect my ability to participate in communion?

The best thing would be to ask a local priest. If I had to guess, it would be that as long as you went to confession, you should be able to receive.

Yes, you need to go to Confession after being away from the Church for years. Ask your Confessor or pastor this question. I would imagine that you could take Communion.

Welcome back!

Do you feel repentance? Then I would say yes. We were just reminded recently about “Doctors of Law” and rules and mercy. So if you are repentant go ahead.

You need to first talk to a priest. You won’t honestly know where you stand until you talk to one. He can hear your confession and guide you through whatever if anything else is needed.
