My mom passed away last April. In trying to deal with my grief I’ve been listening to sad songs and I’ve learned very few songs really touch that depth of that emotion. The atheist at work suggested I listen to Cohen and so I offer my first offering.

Play me a sad song.

I’m sorry to hear about that. I’ll include you in my prayer.

Sorry, I have no sad songs to offer.

When my spouse passed away, this beautiful song, sung by Eva Cassidy, helped…

I know it’s been around the block a thousand times, but it always makes me bawl. So sorry for your loss. <3

Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater is a classic. Vivaldi and Scarlatti also have good settings on the same hymn.

Science suggests that with “$1000 Wedding,” Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris actually pushed up against the physical limits of sadness in a song.

Piece 17, by Leo Kottke, here played by Bert Bouwhuis.
(Kottke played it better, but it’s not available on YouTube.)

Funny you should post this while I was grabbing the link to post the song Bernie Leadon wrote about his death.

One of these days I’m planning to go stay the night in his memorial motel room. I think they still let people do that. I confess I am not and have never been a fan of Miz Emmylou though.

Well, neither was Mrs. Parsons, to put it mildly. Make of that what you will.

Yeah, that’s not why I dislike her, although I personally think GP should have just married Nancy.
Just never liked Emmylou Harris’ voice and style much.

Practically ANY song written and sung by Leonard Cohen will do. And if one is happy, listening to Cohen’s repertoire for a while will surely change that feeling.
