So sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. We lost my father in June this year. I still feel there’s a void in the world. This is my favourite sad song.

“Piano Man” always makes me sad.

The version of Amazing Grace where they sing about “ my chains are gone”

This guy I think is named Stapleton. Where Rainbows Never Die.

Handel’s Messiah Hallelujah Chorus.

I believe Ed Sheeran’s song Supermarket Flowers is about mum passing away

Gilbert O’Sullivan mentions the passing of his mother in his dreary hit, “Alone Again, Naturally,” and I recall that David Gates of Bread said the he wrote “Everything I Own” for the passing of his father.

I didn’t know that about the Bread song. I thought it was about a relationship.

I used to like that Gilbert o’Sullivan song as a kid because it had a nice melody. I didn’t really understand the words as I was about 10. My mother listened to the words and told me it was about the most depressing song she ever heard.

Oh, I don’t like all his work or his later singing when his voice became more of a growl. But some of his songs are, I think, great poetry, which they were at the start. Admittedly, he is not to everyone’s taste and can be a downer at times. Little known fact: there was a time he was thinking of being a country singer. Hard to imagine.

That bus ride sounds like a nightmare! LOL
I think he’s a very good songwriter; especially his later songs are marvels of economy and simplicity.

All of Gustav Mahler’s work has the reputation of being gloomily depressing - but your mileage may vary.

I am sorry.

Here are a couple of my favorite “sad” songs. They are inspired by the experience of the main protagonist in Kentaro Miura’s manga Berserk.

These are also the two softest songs for this particular band.

Garth Brooks: The dance.

“I could have missed the pain, but I’d have had to miss the dance.”

One of the few artists who still does legitimate Country Music:

“Amor Eterno” by Rocio Durcal or Juan Gabriel.

My mother is still alive and I bawl my eyes out whenever I hear this.

Kamelot’s “Don’t You Cry” written by the main songwriter on the passing of his dad:

Savatage’s “Alone You Breathe” written by the main songwriter on the untimely passing of his brother and bandmate (he was struck by a drunk driver):

Skyclad’s “Constance Eternal” written by the main songwriter on the passing of his grandmother:

Not written for anyone’s passing, but this one always tugs on my heart strings from the group most known for “The Final Countdown”:
