Hi everyone. I have a highly Occultic computer game called NeverWinter Nights. I am just wondering, would it be a good idea to play this game or not? Should I just get rid of the game?

Can you be more specific what you mean by, “occultic?” I mean, specific to what way the game is occultic.

Its based on Dungeons and Dragons. In the game you cast spells, play a character which is something like a druid, wizard, or whatever. And in one point in the game, there is actually a big pentagram on the floor.

Well, there’s no question about real occult games, I mean, in real life, calling on spirits or magic is not only sinful but dangerous.

However… with video games, I don’t see how it could be dangerous unless you take it seriously. After all, when a character in a game conjures a spell, he isn’t calling on a spirit, he’s calling on a pre-programmed computer code and the graphics processor :).

It would be dangerous to start to idolize casting spells and calling on spirits… because that would be desiring something illicit.

So, I really don’t see the problem. However, I’m not a moral theologian…

I think it’s your call. If it bothers you, then I certainly tell you not to disobey your conscience.

There is nothing “Occultic” about NWN. It is Fantasy. But if it bothers you nothing is stopping you from playing as a Holy Paladin in the service of God.

BTW. The D&D game I play is set in 14th century France. I play as a Holy Knight of the Chalice. I hunt Demons and Heretics in the Name of Holy Mother Church.

Fantasy games are only limited by your imagination.

I submit to you that Dunegons & Dragons can be, like most anything found in our vale of tears, used for either good or evil. It is simply a fantasy setting and, as such, proposes nor contains any inherent ideology.

In the end, however, it is the disposition of the participant that matters. Sin is conceived in temptation, borne of thought and reared in action.

One could liken it to the fairy-tale worlds of the nursery rhymes so many of us came to love in our childhood. These stories were replete with monsters, elves, fairies, dragons and witches, the latter of whom presumably derived their powers from dark forces. The memorable marks of these stories, however, were not the mythical conventions they employed but rather the “morals” they imparted. The tale of the village-marauding best who is slain by the valiant knight is one of epic virtue, not demonic glory.

And also there’s the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which Tolkien infused with Catholic principals, that has elves and wizards and magic. If it’s just fantasy, I don’t see the harm. As Mad Amos said, when evil is vanquished it becomes a tale of virtue.

Wonder if the same thing applies to horror movies?

Occultic - no, it’s not. It’s fantasy magic, like LOTR, rather than serious magic. It’s play-pretend. I would throw it away anyway though, because I played it about a year ago and it sucked. Play Morrowind - it’s the same thing, but with a much better levelling system, prettier graphics, and a lot less of the clunkiness.

Now, if you were playing that new White Wolf tabletop game -Scion, I think it’s called - with voodoo gods and stuff, then I don’t know how wise that would be, especially if you played it LARP.
