My childhood church (Conference Baptist) has one of those billboards on the front lawn, and every few days, they post a new “pithy” saying or encouragement (or sometimes the date and time of the Choir’s latest Cantata or the All Church Picnic!)
This was posted last weekend, and it’s still up:
Minimize the rules, maximize the relationship. Jesus did!
My twenty-five year-old daughter, a new Catholic, thought this was nonsense. She was very offended.
I’ve been thinking about it a lot and I agree with her.
First, I believe it is a “swipe” against liturgy and any kind of traditional worship or “church.” (My childhood church has been taken over by “modernists.”) I think this is an ignorant statement. Liturgical worship does not detract from a relationship with Jesus; IMO, liturgy enhances the relationship, just as little “rituals” between my husband and me enhance our relationship.
Second, I think it is foolish and even dangerous to try to have relationships with no rules. My husband and I follow rules in our relationship (29 years married)–e.g., we let each other know where we are and will be. e.g., we don’t spend a lot of money on a big item without talking about it first.
Also, families have rules. e.g., If you have a snack, clean up after yourself e.g., No one is allowed to hit anyone else.
I have lots of other negative thoughts, but I am interested in what all of you think.
And then we’ll start on the pithy saying on the other side of their billboard–“Anger is temporary insanity.” :nope:
