Please comment on this quote that I read on my college age daughters facebook page. I’d like to tell her what a bad work ethic it shows among other things but I have zero ability to communicate. Here’s the quote:
“Go out on a Tuesday with your friends when you have a paper due Wednesday. Spend money you don’t have. Drink 'til sunrise. The work never ends, but college does.”

I would ignore it - shes in college, so long as her grades are ok I suspect its just a throwaway comment my facebook wall is full of quotes from my friends, favourite authors & poets, things Ive heard around!

They do not sum up my life they are just quotes - things that look cool when people look at my wall!

Shes old enough to think for herself and if that is the worst thing you have read/seen I assure you she is fine!

I don’t think its a big deal, being she’s in college. I’d suggest after graduation to check it. Potential employers may check it. I’ve heard some HR people visit Facebook pages on applicants to get insights on those on their short list.

Yeah, I agree…nothing to be alarmed over…it reminds me of one of those ‘dance like no one is watching’ kind of things. I think she is implying to enjoy the college ‘free’ life as much as you can. But, you could still address it…like maybe joking around…‘hey, i read that blurb on your facebook…i hope you’re taking your studies seriously…’ kind of comment. See the reply.

I would not have facebook or my space as an adult looking for work though…many employers look at online activities now of applicants, and if they think someone is too immature or whatever by what is posted on there, that could hinder their job prospects. Just a thought. Good luck with talking to her.

Oh I would ignore it!

As a recent college grad myself [2 yrs out], most college kids have a good balance of the fun + the work. We always said stuff like that.

Of course…we also said that college gave us great time management skills, because we needed to have our homework done so we could make bar time in the evenings…

The good part about facebook is that everyone can make their page private so only “friends” can access it…

As for the quote…sounds like regular college-age stuff and probably nothing to fret over.

One of the common danger of having online profiles in social networks as in facebook, is being someone we aren’t. For your sake, do not worry as much IF you know that this is not really the attitude of your daughter. As for its effect regarding her work ethic, it won’t probably as much a problem since only her friends sess this, I hope.

Exactly my thoughts. What you put on the internet CAN come back to haunt you. Like it or not, everything in email or online should be considered public knowledge that will be seen by your boss, your spouse, your kids, your parents…

Are her grades ok? If so then she is not living the quote. I wouldn’t worry about it. Here’s some good timing for your sake - right now on the MSN homepage there is a link to an article about people who lost their jobs because of the facebook page content. Ask her if she saw that. Maybe she’ll get the hint!

My employer checked my Facebook back in the day, and I had NO idea they even did that. I had plenty of pictures with alcohol or comments left on my “wall” that were probably inappropriate.

While I think that potential employers look at it, I don’t think it has as big of an impact as we are sometimes led to believe.

I work for a really stereotypical corporate company, and it has never been brought up other than to let me know they looked at it. I still have no idea how they did it, because back then only Friends could see your Facebook…now they’ve change it so much I am sure it isn’t hard for companies.

Of course, now that Facebook has changed so much I am very careful about which pictures I put up or what pictures of me my friends “tag” for fear of a client or customer seeing them.

I want to add that I am sure there are some companies who take it really seriously, but I don’t think that is the status quo. Plus, I am sure any employer would be upset if there were pictures involving drugs, excessive alcohol, nudity, etc.
