All that said, you know what?

I have a new take on the OP.

OP, try this. Please. purchase an inexpensive Bible, or dedicate one you already have, get out highlighters and red pens and let 'er rip… do your best. Circle things and draw arrows to be continued on the next page to where they point. Make a star and circle it next to a verse you might want to memorize.

Just treat it like you’re plowing through the garden, tilling soil and marking good seeds and sprouts, rather than you are viewing a pristine document that should never touched.

Yeah. I might even do it. Get me a $12 Bible and have at it. Down and dirty with the Written Word. Woo hoo! 😛

Those would be the low achievers who can follow old highlights to get decent on the exam, while I learn the material properly and thoroughly, ace the test with my super ninja test taking skills, and totally blow the curve so they don’t get the easy A they don’t deserve. 😃
LOL
No free rides!

Woo hoo is right!~
Mining the word of God is a joyous journey.

I have two bibles that I write in. One is devotional and one is for study. I find it very helpful to both study and prayer. I especially like in my devotional bible when I see a date that I wrote in next to a passage as it helps me to see how far I have come, or what I really need to revisit.

I would recommend AGAINST writing in your bible. Your own notes can hinder future readings of the bible and hamper the Holy Spirit from guiding you into new insights into passage. If you want to remember what you thought about certain passages - keep a bible journal organized by book of the bible.

That’s why I suggested devote a particular Bible for this purpose, for the sake of “giving it a shot.” If I’m studying for a particular exam, sometimes it helps to have certain points highlighted but like you, I generally find it distracting.

Plus, when I read the Bible, it hits me differently than every other time. If I don’t mark it up, then the Word is free to have access to me, without competing with “yesterday’s scratch paper” but with a “clean view” of the Word, each time.

Another option I do use, in case I hadn’t mentioned before, is like I’ll print out a chapter on paper, then mark it all up as much as I want for whatever reason, and then trash it.

New American is the best Catholic Bible ever put forth and yes, I will underline and circle verses that help me. Been reading Sirach lately and can’t put the pen down. The Bible is a help guide that the church gave us, it is not God or the Church him/itself. Write in it. Peace.

You just gave me an idea. :newidea:

I was thinking of reading Sirach, pen in hand, excited and all but not wanting to mark the book. :hmmm:

So instead, I can get blank paper, and write out the verses longhand. :coffee:

So instead of just writing in a Bible, this is simply, writing a Bible.

Like you said, the Bible is not God; I can write one just as well as any laser printer. 😛

not as fast maybe, or legibly, but through my own hand these inspired words may flow! :bible1:

As others have said- have a working Bible if you’re going to underline/highlight. I like highlighting vice underlining as I think it maintains the legibility better. I don’t write in the margins since it’s difficult to read. Did that with a copy of “Faith of the Early Fathers”- color coding based on different subjects like the real presence in the eucharist, baptism, reconciliation, marian doctines, papal authority etc.

I actually recommend tabbing as well. I have a hard time remembering the book and verse numbers, so attaching tabs to the pages may work better for you to mark particularly relevant points that you want to go back to often. You can also color code them by subjects that are important to you. You can keep a study journal in the same way, a binder divided into color coded sections with your notes on the sections of scripture vice trying to cram stuff into the margins.

Whatever assists you in studying and immersing yourself in scripture.
