I am wondering what it is called when we know that we are supposed to be doing something for God, and we purposefully disobey and do not do it?

Can someone please show me in the catechism, or explain and expound on this topic for me?
I have a friend who has known for about 5 yrs that the catholic church is the true church and he has dragged his feet and not gone to rcia, even though he knows he needs to and admits it. He has difficulty with making commitments in life, including relationships, and I thought this was an aspect of intillectual pride since he loves to ask questions and have knowledge(gnosis) instead of taking the action.(epi gnosis) He has been in a personal relationship with Jesus since he was a teen and loves the Lord, but knows he is being disobedient.

I would appreciate any help on the topic. peace rsh

I am not sure that he fits the purposefully disobeying God label. His has not pursued the Catholic Church in earnest for some reason. He may be saying that it sounds right, but his heart is not here yet.

I would call him Christian but not yet called to Catholicism.

We call that a sin.

A sin of omission or a sin against conscience.

846 How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers? Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body:

Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.

It sounds like he is procrastinating (not outright refusing). Thus, he is probably not incurring mortal sin as a result (because his intent is to join). We cannot commit mortal sin unless we firmly intend to do so.

Try helping him along. Offer to go to RCIA with him (and be his sponsor). You can go for pizza & beer after the class and talk about what was presented.
