I agree with the above explaination. It usually describes a couple who is still living together but refraining from marital relations (such as a couple who married outside the church and are refraning from relations until they can have a sacramental marriage recognized by the church).

I can give you an example…

My dh moved into my house before our marriage because I was having trouble with my oldest child hitting me. His presence in the home saved me from getting hurt and helped me take care of my children after I had back surgery. Him living there was an occasion of scandal because people would assume we were having sex and I had children in the home that I was raising. We had separate bedrooms and made it clear to the children that my room was mine and his room was his so they would understand that we were not engaging in sexual activity (they were 14, 11, and 9 at the time). My DH also had a little girl who stayed at my house when visiting her dad… she was 7 at the time. Her mom did assume we were having sex and even made a big deal out of telling her little girl that there was no way we had separate bedrooms when the little girl mentioned to her mom that she went into daddy’s room for something.

There was of course no way of telling the whole world that we were living chastely… and people are going to assume what they want even if you do tell them. But I am sure that many were scandalized by my dh living at my house before our marriage even though we weren’t doing anything wrong.
