SAVINGRACE

I have been away from CAF because I’ve been working hard on opposing the same sex marriage vote happening at this moment in Australia.

On Monday night Q&A one of the most watched news panel shows will be on at 930pm AEST. Fr Frank Brennan the most high profile Jesuit priest in this country will be on the show and he will be promoting the YES vote.

Fr Brennan is also the CEO of Catholic Social Services in Australia.

I have emailed his Bishop to bring attention to it and lodged my disappointment in this especially since all of the foot soldiers have been working so hard for the NO vote. Why would a clergyman publicly go against Church Teachings? If clergy feel that way then should they reconsider their options for a new career? Why publicly battle His Church on Doctrine that will never change?

Please pray for for him and for all of us especially me as I am feeling a lot of anger. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I believe most Jesuits nowadays are venturing into heterodox waters.

St. Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us!

I believe that Jesus is love yes.
Bumper sticker theology isn’t very helpful.

What does it mean for Jesus to be love?

Does it mean Jesus approves of everything you do with no strings attached? Isn’t that the exact opposite of what believing in Jesus means?

I would think that Jesus having absolute faith in you or I isn’t quite the same thing as you or I having absolute faith in Jesus, does it?

I mean whose will is the one that ought to take precedence? Our wills or God’s will?

Neatly put. Yes Jesus IS love but yes there are for wanrt of a better word, rules. Read the gospels and His words not the popular “God is love” stuff who say anything goes. We here in Ireland are facing abortion becoming freely availalable and “love” for the “poor girls” is being a reason. Free love and anything goes is not of Christ. “I came not to destroy the law but to fulfil it”

Vote yes if for no other reason than ISIS supports a “no” vote.
How foolish. I guess if ISIS were against westerners committing suicide, you’d run to kill yourself?

Father Brennan doesn’t seem to be “battling his Church on doctrine.” The article states:
Father Brennan said he continued to espouse the Catholic Church’s teaching on marriage - that it is between a man and a woman - but this had to be separated from civil marriage, which was the question before the Australian people.
He appears to agree with the doctrine of the Church but does not think it should be imposed on others outside the Church, including those who come from countries that have already legalized gay marriage.

From a legal perspective, it makes sense, although I know this is not what some Catholics want to hear.

As for whether he should leave the Church, I don’t think it’s healthy for any organization to suggest that people who express dissent or an opposing viewpoint should just get lost. That doesn’t help any organization develop and grow. Plus, he didn’t say the Church should start marrying gay people tomorrow or disagree that sacramental marriage is between a man and a woman, so he did not defy the Church teaching. The Church doesn’t have ultimate authority in matters of state, which is what he’s talking about.

…please, who are you trying to fool? You have some good posts in some other areas, but here you are so far off it’s so sad.

I went to a Jesuit-affiliated university; they think like lawyers, as do I. That doesn’t mean I always agree with everything coming out of a Jesuit’s mouth, but their views generally seem well-reasoned to me, including the ones expressed by our Jesuit pope. If I were a man, I would have probably tried to join the order. YMMV.

Like I said, way, way off.

There is no logic or reason in this. I hope the 30 pieces of silver are worth it. There is only one reason he alone, among the many other priests and bishops in Australia is getting air time on Q&A.

‘The corruption of the best is the worst’

“For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

This is not correct, and you are also not offering a logical or reasonable counter-argument when you make snide remarks about 30 pieces of silver, etc.
I am not motivated by any personal gain here. It would frankly be easier for me to just shut up and go along with the majority on this forum who hold the opposite view.

We can’t create civil institutions with a bunch of civil legal rights attached to them, and then make them available only to adherents of one faith or even a group of particular faiths. When we do things like that, we are like the oppressive Muslim countries.
