I dont usually post as I normally trawl through the posts hoping I can find a resolution to our problem, but to no avail. My husband and I have been married 25 years and have 7 children our youngest is 6. We have only had sex once in nearly 10 months it is breaking my heart and I feel so unloved, my husband says he still loves me but shows me no affection. He had major heart surgery 4 months ago and initially I thought once he recovered things would improve but the more I try to get close he pushes me away but I am so confused as he tells me he couldn’t love me more ?? We are both practcing catholics and very involved in our parish so I can’t understand why he isn’t honouring his wedding vows. Sorry I probably am making little sense.

Anne Marie I will pray for the two of you. I wonder though if the fear of another trauma may be affecting his decisions. Do you know if he’s discussed this with his doctor? The fact that he’s telling you he couldn’t love you more might mean there something else going on in his mind. You know women aren’t the only ones who struggle with change of life. I would be patient and let him feel comfortable sharing his feelings in his own way. Men are pretty proud and don’t often let on when somethings bothering them.

Bless you both. Karen

After my heart surgery I noticed physical changes, as well as personality changes. I have friends who experienced the same. I am a health care professional, so I know it is not my imagination. Having the heart stopped during surgery can have some odd effects, possibly due to reduced oxygenation. I think you should see his primary physician and cardiologist, as well as discussing the issues with your priest.

Same thing with my husband after heart surgery. Before he had it was discussed with us there might be some changes.

Hi mam,

I was thinking the same thing as Karen–that maybe fear of intimacy is perhaps holding him back?

I don’t know if your husband is on any heart or blood pressure medications since his heart surgery. I can tell you as someone who takes a heart medication, that the medication makes me feel tired. When I first started it, the doctor told me that this was a common side-effect.

I am bringing up possible medication side-effects as something else to consider, if that is a possibility for him.

I will keep you both in my prayers.

You’re making perfect sense.

I know that some medications can even affect libido. For all we know, it could even be something as simple as that for the physical aspect of it. He may need to see a doctor about the physical problem to see what he could do about this problem. If it’s a problem for you, it’s a problem for the relationship, though he may not want to see it that way.

It may be more, in which is where counseling would come in.

As for the lack of affection part, I can’t really speak to that, since I don’t know him.

Could you ask him to go to marital counseling with you, preferably with a Catholic Counseling, like with Catholic Social Services, or Retrovaille?

If he refuses to go, I really think you should go by yourself.

I’ll close with a prayer. Good luck and God bless.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blest is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. :angel1:

Dear Sister in Christ: This is a not uncommon problem among those who have had heart attacks or heart surgery. It isn’t always due to meds, either, although that can also contribute to the problem. My husband had a heart attack 3 years before he passed away (NOT from heart problems). He was afraid of having intimate relations because he feared his heart would stop if he did. He was upfront about this fear with me, but most men (and a lot of women) don’t want to admit to the fear they feel. After a year, the Cardiologist told him his heart was undamaged and in good shape, but he had 7 - yes 7 - blockages in major arteries below the heart. He feared that getting his heart pumping harder (which it would during sex) would either cause a clot to break loose or stop his heart. We would kiss a few times each day, and hug a few times, but that was all. We never had intimate relations again. His first wife had open heart surgery (4 bypasses), they were both Nurses, as I was, and she never wanted to have relations again. Several years later she became ill with a terminal illness, and eventually died. They had not had relations for over 10 years. Even though she had a M.S. in Nursing, and specialized in Cardiology, the fear was still there. I knew this, and when he got the same fear, I understood it. We continued to love each other tremendously, but had no intimacy again. He also died of a terminal disease (cancer) 3 years later. As long as he loves you, you can, indeed live without the intimacy for as long as necessary. Eventually, his cardiologist may be able to convince him it is safe (if it is), but meantime, please realize that those with a heart problem are actually terrified of dying if they have sexual relations. He doesn’t want to die at such an intimate time and leave you with that memory! Be patient with him, talk to his cardiologist, and in the meantime live a chaste life. The promises at marriage are for “better or worse, and in sickness and in health”. You are now getting the downside, but the promises you both made are still valid. Don’t get so uptight about it, just try to talk to him, but first talk to his cardiologist. It may take him months to get over the fears involved, as they can run very deeply. I will say a prayer for you both.

There are changes in people after open heart surgery. It may be the meds, some live in a state of fear for awhile.Sex isn’t all marriage is about. Show him how you love him in gestures and actions - non-sexual. Perhaps you can focus on how he felt and is feeling rather than on your wants. Please don’t pressure him. What if it were you in his position?

God bless your husband, you and your family.

In the 6 months prior to the operation, you had sex either once, or not at all. Were his heart issues well known at the time, and thus could they explain the lack of sex in the months prior to the operation?

Have you asked your husband directly and plainly (and gently) why sex is no longer being shared?
