I am a 37 year old woman who recovered 2 yrs ago from breast cancer and I have struggled with anxiety and depression all of my life. In the last 10-15 years, this has led to numbness in my life and in my relationship with God. I also have dating/intimacy anxiety and only one short serious relationship in my life.
Last summer, I began noticing a man at work, we flirted a little which was really unusual for me and went out but after one date the anxiety overwhelmed me. One morning, at the end of November, I prayed that God would soften my heart towards Him. Within an hour of my prayer, this man, who is also Catholic, was at my desk inviting me to a Catholic faith renewal event in January. I realized that not only did I want to go but I wanted to get to know him. We started dating and quickly got very emotionally close. We seemed compatible in every way and had lots of chemistry. It seemed like all the pieces were in place for a serious relationship and possibly marriage. For the first time in my life, I was developing real feelings for someone. The day before our fifth date, I had my annual ob/gyn appt. I happened to ask about a small spot I had noticed that came and went earlier in the year. The doctor said he could not confirm it without a biopsy but he was suspicious that it is herpes. I was devastated. In my previous relationship, I made a mistake because I was at the beginning of my current problems/numbness with God. After our fifth date that night, I sent him an email. I was worried because I had noticed that he is a germaphobe with possibly OCD. I still hoped that it would be okay because I apparently have a very mild case with symptoms only once every few years. However, he responded that he could not continue dating me. I was so devastated and angry at God but I got this idea, I believed from God that maybe this was God’s way of slowing down our relationship. I had been planning on sleeping with him as soon as our relationship became serious. I promised God that if we ever got back together, I would not have premarital sex with him. I hoped that this was what God wanted- for us to be together but in a more holy way. Again, within the hour of my talk with God, I got an email from this man wanting to get together and talk. He said he could not bear not having me in his life but that STDs is one of his phobias. He said he was going to try to ride out his problem on his mountain bike because he did want to be with me. The rest of December and throughout January, I prayed nightly to God and novenas to St. Mary and St. Joseph, St. Jude and Blessed Anna Maria Taigi. He would go through long periods of time where it seemed like he was avoiding me but when we did see each other at work what I saw in his words and in his face, it seemed like he was in love with me. I continued to pray and often experienced encouraging signs when I despaired. One night I felt that God was telling me that my vocation was to be a wife and mother- things that I had never wanted before but now craved. The Catholic Renewal event was at the end of January and it turned out to be short and kind of standard. Nothing really stood out to me other than we sat close together and it felt intimate and loving. I thought maybe this was why God wanted me to come- maybe He wanted to use love to melt the numbness out of my life. However, this last week I was depressed, anxious, I was having terrible back and side pain. All along, I had been neglecting the rest of my life, I hadn’t been able to sleep, concentrate or think about anything else for weeks and I felt like I was coming apart mentally and physically so maybe it was impatient of me, maybe not God’s will but after another day of loving words & looks, I asked him if he wanted to hang out. He avoided my suggestion and later I also sent him an email telling him I’d developed serious feelings for him. The next day he completely ignored me. I sent him another emotional email with questions about his intentions to which his response was vague and dismissive. I suggested we stop flirting and his response was so enthusiastic that I finally couldn’t take it anymore and today I sent him an email asking for space and time off from our friendship. It feels final.
So here are my questions, why would God answer my original prayer through this man? Could it have been the devil? Would the devil be allowed to misguide, when God knows I’m lacking faith, that is the very thing I’m praying for?
Why do I feel like a life following Him is constant character-building tests of faith but no joy, no successes, nothing to balance them?
Because of my social anxiety, I rarely thought about dating and love. Why show me what I’ve been missing only to take it away?
God knew that I have herpes and that this man has a phobia towards it. Why would He bring us together and make us seem so perfect for each other only to have this happen?
What about all the encouraging signs? Were they referring to a future love? But then why, knowing I’m already fragile when it comes to dating and intimacy, why would He put me in a situation to completely destroy that part of me? How will I ever be able to open myself up again to date knowing all the marks against me? Was it me and not God putting ideas of holy marriage and parenthood in my heart?
What does it mean that God and this man are so intertwined in my heart? I so want to love both but it seems like neither wants me. They are both uncommunicative and they have both let me down. Both promised me a lot but seemingly didn’t follow through.
I prayed so much and put in dozens of prayer requests all over the internet to not be misguided or misled in this situation. Why would He finally split us only after I feel I’ve fallen in love with him?
Am I supposed to continue praying for us to be together? Because I don’t feel like praying at all anymore. I tried so hard to be faithful and to trust Him but now I feel more numb than before any of this happened.

You need some profesional guidance. Seek counseling or a referral through your priest.

You need more help than what can be given on a public forum. There are too many issues here.
First, get to the dr. and see what’s going on physically.
Make sure to also see a priest ASAP and get some spiritual direction. Schedule regular appointments with a spiritual director and possibly a therapist. You need to understand why your actions seem to be in crisis mode.
I will pray for you!

Dear sister in Jesus.

I’m so sorry for your trouble.

Like the other posters here I think you need to get help for your anxiety and depression by a good Christian psychologist. No one should simply accept a life of depression and anxiety. There is actually medicin also for these problems, which helps a lot of people.

Look I think most of us here have been very in love and attached to some person at one point, where it didn’t work out and we asked God “why did you let me meet this person?” We are in emotional agony and we feel confused. I think sometimes our emotions go their own way… its part of the world and the flesh. I mean, when eg. a married person falls in love with another person than his spouse, we will also know that these emotions have little to do with truth, and we know that God didn’t take pleasure in it. God tempts no one, says the Bible…

Heartache is a disease that most of us have had. Its extremely painful. Yet believe me it does get easier after a few months. I know, because I have just lived through it myself… I must admit I have sought to blackmail God and gave him the cold shoulder and shouted at him many times because I wanted a certain man to be mine. I tried everything to force Gods hand… but God cannot be forced. He sees the bigger picture.
… I have now realised that if something is not working from the beginning, its likely not gonna work even if we force it. The peace of the Holy Spirit, felt in your heart, will tell you alot about relationships and whether they are good or bad. After my relationship dragged on for many, many months I started to see why God had not let everything fall into place for me and this man… because he saw that some greater devastation would await me later if I stayed with the man.

You only know this guy very little - its alsways easy to have good chemistry and fantasize about people in the beginning - but I suspect that this guy would not have made you happy.
I think that if your emotional health gets better you will feel more happiness overall, and you can find another man who will accept you and who doesn’t have a obsessive compulsion. I mean, you cannot really want to have a man who cannot accept you. That is already a sign that you guys were not meant to be.
What you say about planning to sleep with the guy makes me think you need to pray and read more about the theology of the body. Indeed getting involved physically with the wrong people can make depressions ten times worse. You have to start loving yourself, and not just stay on the right path because you wanna make a deal with God.
God sees far, while our sight is so short.

Hugs to you… please seek help. 🙂

Maybe God answered prayers to put you on the right path. You have now had a chaste eye opener: that there CAN be fulfilling relationships out there for you.

So maybe God’s answer to you is “I want you to walk down this path… but not stop on the first stepping stone along the way”.
Why do I feel like a life following Him is constant character-building tests of faith but no joy, no successes, nothing to balance them?
I do hope you’re being hyperbolic with this. I spent seven months in Afghanistan and I can tell you that there’s very little for ANY Westerner to justify saying that they have NOTHING joyous or successful in their lives. Do you get more than 1,200 calories a day? You’re well fed by world standards. Do you have a bank account, a checkbook, and spare change in your purse? You’re in the top 20% of wealthy people in the world then.

Even now you’re typing on an online forum… something that would have blown peoples’s minds 40 years ago. There are people in the world who have NO concept of a country where 99% can read… much less the idea that we could all type and share ideas in magical cyberspace land.

What I’m saying is… slow down and smell the roses. You’re so busy looking for utter perfection that you’re missing the AMAZING world you have around you right now.
Because of my social anxiety, I rarely thought about dating and love. Why show me what I’ve been missing only to take it away?
Seems to me like God wanted you to think about dating and love… just not with this man. He’s the one who got you started down that path, but he’s not the end that God has in store for you.
God knew that I have herpes and that this man has a phobia towards it. Why would He bring us together and make us seem so perfect for each other only to have this happen?
Are you sure you have herpes? You never mention getting tested and confirmed. Your OBGYN should have referred you for an STD blood test to confirm his assessment.

Second, why is he such a pansy about this? Let me note something: more than half of Americans have herpes of SOME FORM (even if it’s merely cold sores). I’ve gotten cold sores all my life. As far as I know, I inherited it from my parents as a child. Most people who have herpes will either never show symptoms or will only show symptoms once in their life. Odds are, this man has some strain of herpes too.

There are also drugs to treat herpes… which if taken regularly prevent the virus from “shedding” through the skin… which means you’d never have an outbreak and you’d never be contagious as long as you took this pill once a day. The name of it slips my mind at the moment, but I have a bottle sitting on my table at home in case I feel a cold sore forming (then I take it for three days and the cold sore goes away almost immediately)
This is just a rephrase of a previous question, but I’ll add this as well… you’ve struck out a grand total of twice, according to your post. You’ve had two serious relationships.

There are more than 3 billion men in the world… you’ve given a grand total of 0.0000000006% of them consideration for a relationship. Expecting to find great success THAT quickly is a bit unrealistic. Cases where people find their “forever” partner in the first two people they seriously date are rare.
Am I supposed to continue praying for us to be together? Because I don’t feel like praying at all anymore. I tried so hard to be faithful and to trust Him but now I feel more numb than before any of this happened.
Honestly, it sounds like the guy isn’t all you’ve got him made out to be in your head. I’d look to move on from him… but take the goodness that you got out of the relationship and realize that maybe that’s your calling.

And you should be praying that God’s will be done, rather than your own. I would find God a little bit irresponsible to place you with a guy who acted so strangely about the fact that you, like more than half of Americans, MIGHT POSSIBLY have a strain of herpes.

Thats a good post brother 👍

Thank you for your answers gracedk and promethius.

(By the way, I am accessing medical & psychiatric help already. I’m just trying to get help and advice from every avenue)

Also I apologize for the highly anxious tone of my post. I was mainly in panic mode about whether or not I had done the right thing cutting off contact with him and the anxiety spread to everything else as it tends to do.
GraceDK and Promethius, thank you for the reality check. I believe I did do the right thing now. The whole situation had really brought me to a bad place.
Thank you again for your support and taking the time to answer my difficult questions.
