Hey everyone. Could you please help me defend the pro-life position? I have been debating my boyfriend who is pro-abortion. He says that he does not believe that life begins at conception. He says that the unborn life is not as valuable as the life of someone who is born. He also says because abortion is legal, it is therefore moral. How do I defend the pro-life position against such arguments?

Tell him you’re not interested in beliefs but facts. If life didn’t begin until after birth then how did the baby even reach birth? Then ask him where in the pregnancy did the baby go from not being alive to living? If pregnancy begins at conception then life begins at conception. If it didn’t the person would could not be considered pregnant.
He also says because abortion is legal, it is therefore moral. How do I defend the pro-life position against such arguments?
Abortion is moral because it is legal? I would ask him if the actions of the Nazis were moral since killing Jews and other people that did not fit their standards for a pure Arian race was completely legal back in Nazi Germany.

A picture is worth a thousand words, he can argue all day that abortion does not hurt anyone, untill he sees a picture of an aborted baby.
Be sure and mention that slavery was once legal also, that was wrong and so is abortion.
Pray for him, also think long and hard before you get too involved with a proabortion boyfriend, if he does not respect the life of a tiny, helpless baby then how can he ever give you the respect you deserve?

Wow… This is a hard one, since its your boyfriend and you dont want to be too aggressive.
  1. If he doesnt believe that life begins at conception then when does it begin? You have to get him to set a specific timeframe in order to have a reasoned conversation about this. The reply will most likely be either “At birth” or “I dont know”.
1a) The life that begins after conceptions bears all the classical signs of life: They respond to external stimuli; they experience growth (both cellular growth and cellular reproduction); they take in nutrients and excrete waste; have their own dna etc.

1b) “I dont know” automatically leaves open the possibility that life DOES begin at conception so that is the most hopeful scenario.
  1. He says that unborn life is not as valuable as born life… isnt that in itself an implicit acceptance that the child is ALIVE in the womb? Plus, by whose definition is it more valuable? If you take a strictly utilitarian view of value based upon what you produce or bring to society, than no child is alive until they can hold a job and provide for others. It also negates the life of housewives, stay-at-home dads, retired people, the unemployed, etc. etc. etc. It is a very bleak view of the value of an individual.
  2. Ok, abortion is legal. That does not make it moral. It is legal to drink yourself to death, but it is immoral. That is aside from the issue that it is legal only in certain circumstances and only when it is procured by one individual. There are MANY cases where the father of a child attempts to induce an abortion in the mother and finds himself in prison for homicide or attempted homicide. There was a case in the past couple years in Massachusetts where this happened and I guarantee that if you punch a pregnant woman in the stomach and induce a miscarriage you WILL be charged with manslaughter at the very least. Legality does not affect morality.
I think that the only way to discuss this issue with people (especially with loved ones) is to get them talking about what they believe so that they can begin to hear the inherent fallacies in the logic that brought them to that belief and to hear just how ridiculous some of their arguments are. The typical response I get when discussing this with friends is “I dont want to talk about this” but when you manage to coax it out of them their opinions are VERY poorly formed and almost entirely based upon a misplaced concern for the mother with a horrific lack of concern for the child.

At least those would be the points I would hit first.

FSC

P.S. Oh yeah, the slavery and nazi/jew thing also serves to show the weakness of the “legal = moral” argument.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” – Jeremiah 1:4-5

I agree with sherimarie as well…"*also think long and hard before you get too involved with a proabortion boyfriend, if he does not respect the life of a tiny, helpless baby then how can he ever give you the respect you deserve? *"

Rub his shoulders and whisper in his ear that his pro-abortion stance is totally understandable, because abortion definitely makes it easier for him to have sex without responsibility. Then put your finger on his lips and gently tell him that you were once an unborn fetus with less value than a baby. Straighten his tie and say it’s legal for him to get you pregnant only to walk away, mailing you a check every month if you’re lucky and have a good lawyer … so he must think it’s moral.

Then tell him you could have been his forever, but you have too much self-respect to to allow anyone to think of you or to treat you in that way. Then dump him, because this kind of disagreement is a red flag you will regret not paying attention to later on down the road.

If life does not begin at conception, then how would he explain the growth of the fetus? Something does not continue to grow unless it is alive. To say there is not a life is simply ludicrous. Any scientist alive would even tell this scholar of a boyfriend of yours that he is incorrect.

And what is his measuring stick for “value”? What gives him the right to decide who is worthy of life? I always thought God gives the gift of life - not your boyfriend. Why wouldn’t a human fetus have value? Because they’re still in the womb? Is the flesh of a woman’s womb the only thing that is keeping a human life from having value? In the womb = worthless, but once outside the womb = worthy? Makes no sense to anyone who can think with half a brain.

How about a person with disabilities, such as blindness, being crippled, having Downes Syndrome… Does he think these people, too, are not as “valuable” as, say,… him???

What about people with low IQ’s? Are they not as valuable as someone who is highly intelligent?

What about poor people? Are they not as valuable as somone with money?

What about a poor, blind, stupid person. Should we consider them worthless?

Once you start judging for yourself who is worthy of life and who is not, it is quite easy to keep widdling down that acceptance threshold. It is dangerous indeed to allow mere mortals, our equals and peers, to begin judging who and when somone should die. Before you know it, we’re killing everyone off who isn’t between the ages of 25 - 33, completely healthy, and filthy rich.

Because of abortion, we’re already on that slippery slope. Now, we have euthanasia to worry about; physician-assisted suicide; infanticide. No one will be safe. We’re setting ourselves up for a society that has free reign on who to kill.

Define pro-choice for him:

Pro-choice is the choice a woman wants to murder her unborn baby in her womb who is denied choice and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Further this choice is one of power over an innocent defenseless person.

Does your boyfriend also believe that abandoning his wife when he tires of her and filing for divorce (legal) is moral?

Does your boyfriend believe that sex outside of marriage is moral?

Abortion was once illegal in this country, does that mean it was once immoral?

Ditch your boyfriend!!

Absolutely rip snortingingly brilliant answer!

You could also include the fact that if a born baby has more value than an unborn baby, then by the same logic the very young are worth less than those who are older. If the money gets tight he should be able to ‘morally’ justify bumping the smaller kids on the head to save a few dollars. It might be illegal, but then, hey, who said all laws are moral?!

Ask him if he were in charge of demolition of a building…and he only had an opinion that there was no life remaining in the building…that there was still debate about whether someone was still in the building…perhaps he had a moment where he thought there might have been a person passing by a window of the building…

…in this circumstance…with some debate and doubt remaining among the demolition team…what would he do with the plunger of the explosive? What would be the right thing to do, the truly heroic thing to do?

:clapping:

If he is a Christian simply ask when God places the soul in the child if not at conception? If not you have plenty of other problems to deal with besides abortion in your relationship and actually considering you are one you controls whether an abortion happens or not, you may not even have to convince him. As long as he knows in YOUR relationship abortion is not an option.
