I go to daily mass at my parish at 8 am in the mornings. There is a small but failthful crowd who always attends, and the liturgy is done beautifully. My problem comes from myself. I feel extremely self conscious about going everyday, for these reasons:
- my non-Catholic (and even some Catholic) friends and family think I’m crazy for going everyday, that it is excessive, superstitious, scrupulous, you name it
-I feel strange being the only young adult ever there. I wonder sometimes if the older crowd, who seem pretty tight knit with each other, think I’m lame. Even the priest seems to be pretty great friends with the regulars, but he has never done more than nod a greeting to me. I try to focus just on mass but I always end up feeling weird.
I try and try to remember why I’m there - to be there when God becomes present in the Eucharist - and not listen to the naysayers around me and in my own head. I have been diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder - that may be a part of it.
I’m not fishing for praise or approval or anything, but what do people honestly think of young people going alone to daily mass? Any suggestions for how to deal with people who think it is excessive devotion and how to conquer my own self-conscious sensitivity?
Thanks!
