Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I have suffered from bipolar disorder all of my life. I am 60 years old now and I was first hospitalized at 15 for this disorder. I was hospitalized again in my early 20s during which time I was given ten shock treatments because of my profound depression.

Suicide and mental illness run in my family. Yet, I have managed by the grace of God to work for almost 40 years and to have as normal a life as possible with the help of medication. I have only been hospitalized once since my 20s for severe depression. This occurred in 2002 when I lost my job in my 50s. I have been gainfully employed since shortly after I left the hospital in 2002. Three medical doctors put me on disability but I went back to work and cancelled the disability as soon as the nine month trial period was over.

I grew up mainly with only my nuclear family around–father, mother, brother and myself. My older brother (14 months older) is the only member of this family left and many others that lived far away from us are also gone now. I have tried to stay on good graces with my brother because I have so little family left (he has three children and is divorced from his second marriage).

This Easter weekend I was sick. I was very depressed and experiencing a great deal of anxiety. I try not to burden my brother with my cares. Indeed, I never hear from him unless I contact him in some way. He spends his time fishing in Florida where he has a home in the Keys.

My brother’s girlfriend committed suicide with his gun about eight years ago. Then a few years later his oldest son (he had four children originally) committed suicide by hanging himself in the closet of the hotel closest to my brother’s house in the southeast. He left behind a wife and a boy of six and a girl of three. He was a wonderful young man and I believe the medication the psychiatrist gave him played a large role in his suicide because he was one thousand per cent devoted to his children.

You can not get my brother’s attention or I can not for any length of time. He is generally surrounded by a lot of hanger ons like around Anna Nicole Smith (my brother is extremely wealth). I also think neither his girlfriend nor his nephew had much luck getting his attention before their untimely deaths. The hanger ons eat up all his time but this is how he chooses to live. These people come and go and some of us who stay with him such as my nephew and myself get little attention from him.

Anyway, I called my brother over the Easter week because I was really suffering. I called several times. He never called me back. He was busy fishing with his “party pals”. Finally, on Saturday I left a message that one must be pretty cruel to ignore the sufferings of his own family. When he got in from fishing, he called and left a message that he had just received a really nasty message and that he still loved me and to call him sometime.

I called the next day, Easter Sunday, and stated that I was sorry if I had hurt him or some words to that effect…that I still loved him…but he obviously has other priorities than me and my suffering and that that hurt…that was why I had left the message I had…I advised him that he did not need to call me back because he just has other priorities (this is what one psychologist who saw him in his hometown and one psychiatrist whom I saw in his hometown have advised me). I advised him that I just had to accept the fact that he has other priorities.

So essentially I have decided not to call him or e-mail him (usually a one-sided deal most of the time) anymore…I feel really badly and depressed about all of this but it is also very depressing to keep trying to communicate with someone who values hangers on who come and go more than he values his own sister who stood by him when practically the whole world walked out on him…

I thank him profusely for the good things he does for me…I never receive thanks from him and rarely ever receive thanks from his children (except for his nephew who passed away) no matter how much I do for them…yet, he calls me an ingrate if I question any of his behavior, which even the elders in the family do not approve of…

I feel like I should repent or confess but what am I to turn from? If I continue to try and contact him, the outcome will not be any different…he will clearly if he picks up the phone at all only have a minute or two to speak with me before he drifts to the hanger ons…

So, I don’t know what I am supposed to do as a Catholic…I know you can pray for him…and I have prayed for him…right now I have to ask God to help me pray for him because it is hard to keep reaching out to someone who does not appear to care enough about you to even pick up a phone when you are suffering…

Please advise if you can…

Thank you…

HI symPhonic47,

I wish I could help… but I don’t know how. The only thing I know now is to pray.
You know… everytime I feel down, I just hold on to my Rosary and pray.
God loves you… offer your heartaches and sacrifices to the Lord… God never tries us beyond what we are able to suffer… And He always our Father even He sends us trials. I will pray for you…

Oh yes!
symPhonic47, pray and trust to God.
May Christ return health to you! Lift up your head, look up to God, our Redeemer He Himself will coming soon! All will be well! I prayed for you too…
“God never tries us beyond what we are able to suffer…” Yes, How good you say this-windmelody.
symPhonic47, pray that you will say this: “Thank God that I am all right again.”

God knows you are lonely for your brother. It would lift your spirits if you got a
kind word from him. I wonder what would lift your brother’s spirits? If you think
about it, you may think of something. Maybe you could send him some flowers,
or surprise him with a framed picture of the 2 of you as children. If you call again
and have to leave a message, say, “Hi (tom), this is (Mary) calling to say happy
Sunday to you. Hope you’re having a really great day. Call me when you can,
Love you!” Focus away from being mad at him for what he doesn’t do. We have
to learn to be encouragers, like St. Barnabas, who was called “son of encouragement”. You truly do not know why he doesn’t behave the way you
think he should. You may also behave in ways that he doesn’t think you should.
God is the only One who knows everything from all sides. You have to ask Him
what to do. He wants to help you, but sometimes we have to be obedient to
accept other people into our lives that He sends to us. He truly does not want you
to feel lonely. You have helped others by sharing your feelings honestly, there
are certainly others who are feeling just like this! It is very nice that you love your
brother so much. It will bring you greater joy to think up ways to surprise him and
make him happy rather than what to complain to him about. God be with you ,
may you feel His loving presence!:hug1:

I can understand how difficult this situation must be for you. Might I suggest that you get involved in something in your own area? There are so many people in need of friendship; it’s so easy to think that charity and the government are taking care of people, but what so many need is *the personal touch. *And there is so much that could be done! I know people who are visiting nursing homes and other elderly, teaching English to immigrants, volunteering in the schools to help children learn to read just by listening to them.

You want to “reach out and touch” your brother, but he’s not available. That is a cross for you to offer up, but you can also use that desire to “reach out and touch” others instead.

Dear St. Francis,

Thank you so much for your wise counsel. I have decided to do exactly what you suggest. My health prevents me from doing a lot of things as I basically right now make it back and forth to work and take care of my home and my dog and then I crash from exhaustion…but I can pray for others and when at work, I try to encourage everyone I can.

I can only do small things sometimes…like thanking the ROTC students who get off the elevators in our campus building…I always try to thank them for their service because these brave young men and women give so much to us and I pray that they will not have to in the future put their lives on the line although I know that possibility is very real once they leave our school…anyway, this is a small thing but it gives me great joy (because the military is bashed a lot on our campus such as in the student newspaper)…these students usually respond to my thank you for their service with things like “It’s an honor, m’am”, which totally blows me away…they are so fine…

So in these small ways and by praying and praying for others when I am home and work and sending what I can to CRS or to other organizations when there is a catastrophe in the world such as the earthquake in Italy (or to other organizations such as EWTN which bought me to the Catholic faith), I try to do what a mostly home bound work bound person can do…and these things give me great pleasure…

Thank you for your prayers and support…you will be in mine…

Sincerely,

Symphonic

Dear Everyone,

I have tried to send you all private messages thanking you for your prayers and support but it appears that my mailbox got too full.

So I want to make sure that you are all thanked for your prayers and encouragement. I was afraid people were going to condemn me. Instead you offered me love, prayers and support and I cannot thank you enough.

Your prayers are already working as I was able to obtain a good night’s sleep last night, which is absolutely crucial for me to continue in my job and other duties.

Please rest assured that you are all in my deepest prayers and fondest wishes.

Love,

Symphonic

I am so pleased that you are doing this. My dad was in the military and I admire the military people so much for all they do for us. I am sure that you make many a student’s day by your grateful words.

It’s really great that you are praying for others and keeping focused on others in trouble. Keep up the good work, and don’t worry about your brother.

I think the idea of “reaching out” to others is wonderful!

Another idea might be to talk to your priest. I know when I’m feeling down or let down I often feel that I will be wasting the priest’s time or that I don’t deserve his attention, but they really do want to be there for their parishioners and want to help.

And of course, talk to God and ask Jesus to help you carry your cross. It can be very hard, especially if you are struggling with depression and anxiety, but if you get in the habit of talking to them about these kinds of problems, even a little, it can start to become easier over time.

Receiving the Sacrament of Confession may be reassuring, even if there isn’t anything for you to turn from. It sounds like you’ve been doing everything you can to handle this situation, but you seem to have doubts. Maybe let the priest that stands in for Christ know that you have been in this situation, and that it is painful even though you know you handled it well. Even if we do not know of any sin, Confession can clear the path between us and God of the effects of our everyday, minor imperfections and just make that relationship with Him a little less difficult.

I think withdrawing from your brother is probably good for him. It sounds like he might be behaving in a way that is at least a little self-destructive, if he doesn’t have room in his life for you. You’ve drawn his attention to that now, and even if you don’t see the effects, it may be a seed that will grow in his heart before he heads too far along his path - or may at least hold him back a little.
right now I have to ask God to help me pray for him because it is hard to keep reaching out to someone who does not appear to care enough about you to even pick up a phone when you are suffering
I have to ask for help to pray sometimes, too. Thanks for helping me to know I’m not the only one :o Don’t forget to ask for help praying for yourself, too. I know when I’m depressed I have a hard time asking God for help for my own sake.

You seem very strong, and I am very impressed by how well you are handling all these challenges in your life. I guess God knows what you are capable of, too - and you can be sure that He knows how hard everything is for you, and loves you that you seek to bear it with grace. Thanks for sharing your example with us.
