Good Morning,

I really REALLY need help! I had a bad experience at Mass today. 😦

Today I was one of the scheduled Communion Ministers ( I think I’ve read on here that it’s called something else, but the parish that I attend calls it Communin Minister), and after Mass is over, everyone who was scheduled goes to the back to get everything set up for Communion for the next Mass. Well, what my parish used to do, was that if you were one of the people distributing the wine, then once your cup was empty, then you would bring it to the priest so he can purify at the altar.

Since then, maybe a few months ago, the priest now does it where everyone who has a ciborium of the hosts will bring it to the priest, and everyone with a cup puts it on a table to the side, where the priest will purify them AFTER Mass. Therefore, once we have the closing hymn, that is usually when the ministers go to the back to set up, and wash the cups after they have been purified.

The bad part…

I went to the back to help get things set up, and one gentleman grabbed the ciborium to bring back, and I decided to grab the tray holding the cups, and brought them back. Then without thinking, I began to wash them! It’s was truly an accident!!! I didn’t even realize what I had done until the deacon came back, and said "Um, those need to be purified first. Did you forget about that??? He made me feel so bad with his tone, but I know I deserved that. :crying:

Will someone please tell me what I’m supposed to do!!! I apologized, but the deacon didn’t say anything, but it was really, truly an accident. I would never deliberately do such a thing, I really wouldn’t, but now I just feel so ashamed and embarrased, especially because the deacon said that to me in front of the others who where in that back room with me. I’m so humiliated I just don’t know what to do. This has to be the worst moment of my life, as something like this has never happened before. In all honesty, at some point, I somewhat comtemplated taking a break from being a CM (I think you have to do it for 3 years when you sign up, right?), not out of loss of interest, but just because, and especially after this, I really have no motivation to keep doing so…

If you didn’t mean to do it, then it’s very likely that you committed no sin. It is not possible in any way, shape, or form, for you to ā€œaccidentally sinā€. This is probably a sign that you are suffering from scrupulosity. All you can do now is leave that Precious Body and Blood to the angels. Peace be with you šŸ™‚

i’d like to emphasise this, and in fact I’d change your phrase ā€˜very likely committed no sin’ to ā€˜definitely didn’t’.

I second this.

Perhaps talk to your pastor and offer to step down if he wishes, and if he would like you to stay on, please do, and perhaps work a little slower in the future.

God bless you

you ight man you didn’t commit no sin God is a loving God He doesn’t condemn you for things you don’t do on purpose God bless

The deacon was right in that the cup needs to be purified before being washed, but he was wrong to chastize you publicly, as you certainly didn’t mean to offend the Lord. The priest now is ordered to purify the vessels because many were carelessly and thoughtlessly handling the procedure. Don’t let it discourage you. Continue to serve at Communion time. I’m surprised someone there didn’t didn’t try to assure you that all is o.k. If the deacon didn’t accept your apology, you know that the Lord did.

Good Morning,
.
It should not be such an atmosphere of terror during mass!
Accidents happen to everyone, what is the problem?
Go on with your job and forget the whole issue. You were reprimended, you take it in stride, raise your head up, I am talking if you were 17, and go ahead and forget about sins.

ā€œI form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these thingsā€

Isaiah 45:7

The evil character in this story was created by God himself and I just spoke about this with an old friend who is a cardinal.

He thinks that in this particular case you should not have any problems as you did not sin, and that you should seek God’s assistance to obtain reparation after the humiliation God made you go through.

ā€œYe have kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burn forever.ā€ Jeremiah 17:4

That means either you or him is going to hell. Would you want to go to Hell for eternity?

You know what to do now. Follow God’s advise and obtain revenge.

What’s a CM? are you talking about EMHC?

Hello,

Sorry, I should have been more clear. By CM, I mean Communion Minister. I apologize if that is wrong, but that is what I have know it to be called, because that is what my parish calls it. I think I remember though reading on a post that EMHC more proper.

Thank you

Thanks for saying this. I still feel terrible at what happened, and feel embarrassed to go to Church on Sunday, and face the people that were there when the Deacon confronted me. I’m sooo embarrassed. I feel sooo stupid that this happened, even though it was an accidentally. 😦

Does anyone know what I do to stop being a EMHC? I’ve decided I don’t want to do it anymore.
Oh, and just out of curiosity, when you first become one, is there a time frame that Archdiocese expects you to do it for?

Oh, Chrystal, don’t be so hard on yourself. God knows your heart. Please don’t stop being a Communion Minister for a mistake. I’ve made mistakes, and I learned from each and everyone of them. I well pray for you to have some peace of mind.

God bless

May God give you the grace of peace, love and his light. Let yourself be an instrument for
God to work thru you a temple made in his image. God is merciful and his love has no end.
Learn from the mistake done and let the Lord guide you.
Ephesians 6:16
At all times carry faith as a shield; for with it you will be able to put out all the burning arrows shot by the Evil One.
Enjoy participating in the Holy Mass and May God Bless you

In my parish, if one no longer wants to serve for whatever reason, all one needs to do is call the secretary and ask to be removed from the list and schedule. Being approved to serve is not seen as a mandate.

It was simply a learning experience. It was not pleasant but that is all it was. It happened, you were corrected, others learned, you learned. I bet you’ll never do it again, nor will the others that were there. The guy that who mistakenly brought the tray back is who did the most wrong - and it was only an accident.

I am not sure what the purpose of stepping down is. You do it to serve the Lord and your community. Are you punishing them? The deacon was not wrong in correcting you though his done may not have been appropriate. As he should, he takes his role very importantly. Keep doing it and realize who you are holding in your hands. Bask in his love that you are sharing with others.
