In December of 1960, a young girl named Anna was pregnant, and from the beginning the odds were against her unborn child. The father of her child abandoned the family and died in a car accident, leaving Anna as a single mother to raise this black unborn child in a time of poverty and racism. But despite the hardships that this mother faced, Anna made a singular decision that would change the face of America: she chose to keep her unborn child; she chose life over death. And this unborn child grew up to become the first African American president of America: President Barack Obama. This is the ultimate story of inspiration because where there is life, there is hope. Inspiration is not found within 2 minute graduation speeches. True inspiration is found within the daily struggle of moms and dads to bravely sacrifice for their children, for all of us. When a mother pelican bird cannot find food for her baby birds, she will pluck flesh and blood from her very own body in order to feed her young. This is the perfect picture of our own parents’ love for us that is substantiated by self-sacrifice. As we go through life’s difficulties and fall down and make mistakes, we know that we can find forgiveness and acceptance in the arms of our moms and dads. Their unconditional love testifies to the fact that each of us is unique, special, and unrepeatable individuals. As we Lobos leave high school to enter college, let us find inspiration within the love of our parents because their love reminds us to respect life and the intrinsic dignity and sanctity of every human life from the moment of conception to natural death. Congratulations class of 2010, we made it!
