Hello,

For context, I’m getting married in several months and after months of searching, all I can find are strapless wedding dresses that show a lot of back and shoulders…and even though many of these shops offer to put sleeves on a strapless dress, the sleeves seem pretty skimpy to me, and I know I wouldn’t feel good about it. Even in the day to day, I don’t like showing my shoulders or back in public, and I don’t even wear shorts. Dressing conservatively makes me feel comfortable and also helps me know I’m not drawing unwanted attention or seeking attention. And when it comes to the mass, it is of course important to dress modestly for a whole host of reasons. Naturally, for the wedding, I’d like to wear something beautiful, but I feel very limited - the only ones I see that are appropriate are the ones labeled as a “Muslim wedding dress.” I also don’t want to spend too much; I’m still a grad student.

Has anyone else figured this out? Please let me know if there are any shops/resources/other options! Thank you so much!

You might try googling Mormon wedding dresses or orthodox wedding dresses. Both groups go for modest styles.

This is very similar to my wedding gown except that mine had a train. I wanted a modest wedding gown and mine was absolutely gorgeous.

My daughter has been having the same problem but, to us, besides being immodest, strapless is uncomfortable and too out of date. Women have been wearing them for too long.
My daughter wants sleeveless but a higher cut on the chest and her back covered.

It took us 3 shops and approx. 20 dresses that the seller pulled off the racks for her to try on before she found one online that she thinks might be THE dress. The perfect dress is out there, it just takes a lot of patience and time.

My oldest daughter has been using eshakti.com. Every dress is apparently made to order, to your measurements, and is utterly customizable as to everything.

One option could be to buy a strapless dress with a higher neckline (no deep sweetheart) which has a plain bodice. Add a thicker lace bolero or jacket style (buttons/closing in the back or front). As most of the decorations on a dress are on the bodice, it would be a lot cheaper so putting that money “saved” could be spent on a thicker lace and could work out at the same amount as a dress with “everything added”.

The bolero/jacket could be worn on other fancy parties as well.

Wearing a little lace shrug or jacket can solve most problems. I’d still have straps sewn into a staples dress by whoever is doing the alterations even if the shrug covers all you want covered just to keep from worrying about …well…parts shifting while dancing.

Strapless dresses are so uncomfortable, IMO, and don’t stay up very well.

Some were sleeveless and the skirts varied from full to more mermaid or trumpet, but this style seems to be more prevalent than the strapless ones of the past decade and a half.
I think this one’s my favorite out of all the pictures here.

This is indeed very beautiful. My wedding dress was similar to this one - same general pattern but the skirt was fuller and had a train, and the bead pattern on the bodice was different.

You might try and ask if they have anything with a “Queen Anne neckline.” My dress had sleeves that stopped just above the elbow, and a high collar, and sort of a sweetheart neckline, and an A-line dress with train. I rented mine from David’s Bridal, since I didn’t plan on ever wearing it again! 😛

It looked sort of like—

Muslim women like dressing modestly, even in their wedding dresses:
