Hey;
Earlier this year my two parish priests were killed in a car accident. They were very good people, but not the best priests. They were honest products of their seminary formation. I was told by one of these fathers that Christ was “really present” in the community in the same way he was present in the host.
After they died they were replaced by a very orthodox young interim pastor. He bought new hymnals for the church, required the music to meet a certain standard, moved the tabernacle back out into the church, required a crucifix to be present in the church building, and started a rosary before Mass, among other things.
He was not well liked by my very anti-Conservative parish.
We received our permanent pastor in July. He’s a great priest, but not nearly as concerned with enforcing liturgical guidelines and rubrics as the interim pastor was.
Sadly, the parish community seems to have been fostering a growing sense of rebellion since the more traditional priest left. It’s evident in the music; we no longer use the new (more traditional ) hymnals, and the Religious Education director is trying to ban the rosary.
It’s really starting to bother me. I really do love the people at my local parish, but I’m starting to get angry and frustrated at Mass. Things seemed to be changing for the better, and now I can hardly focus on the Eucharist.
Please don’t think I’m being prideful or legalistic, but I think the liturgy is more important than mere taste. I really think the music actually matters, and it bothers me when all the hymns played by our guitarist on a given Sunday are more like community service anthems than praise for God.
It really got to me this evening at the vigil Mass. I’m the sacristan of my parish, and so I serve both Masses on the weekend. I wish there was something I could do.
I don’t want to offend anyone, or come off as an ultra-traditionalist by mentioning anything (and I’m not one!).
I’m starting to dread attending Mass. I get depressed after each service.
I try so hard to remember that I come for Jesus alone, but it’s very difficult at times.
If I leave my parish, the next closest church is in another diocese. I’m in discernment for the priesthood, and I’m well connected where I am now. I don’t want to start over again.
I’d also like to point out that I’m a convert, and it seems a lot of converts struggle with things like this. So if anyone could offer me any suggestions (prayers are also welcome), please do.
