I believe it was last October that the Vatican issued a directive that EMHC’s were not permitted to clean or purifying this items after Mass.
Please, can someone advise me as to where this document is?

Thanks!

Hi,

There was an indult which allowed the EMHC to purify, which was not renewed in October.

Many parishes are asking for permission to continue the practice of purifying by sacristants or EMHC, since there are practical reasons which would prevent this procedure to be reversed.

The USCCB asked for it to be reinstated and it was denied. Parishes need to stop the practice. It’s too bad that the Vatican does not have the ability to fine parishes and diocese that ignore the instructions given them.

HI,

A better understanding of individual situations would be the better choice than fines.

Our Masses are too crowded, and need to be scheduled too close for one priest to purify all the vessels, especially if he is also scheduled for the next Mass.

Certainly it is not my decision, but I won’t question my pastor on this.

Really? Our parish has about 800-1,000 per Mass and the priest and deacon purify the vessels DURING Mass immediately following Communion. It takes about 3-4 minutes at most.

Your pastor may very well not even know that he is doing something wrong. You have a duty to show him what the USCCB has issued on this.

These lines from the above link explain the view of the Vatican.

(Although receiving Communion under both kinds is a “more complete” sign of the sacrament’s meaning, Cardinal Arinze said, “Christ is fully present under each of the species.”

“Communion under the species of the bread alone, as a consequence, makes it possible to receive all the fruit of eucharistic grace,” he added.)

This indicates to me that when there are too many people at a Mass. For instance when one priest and 15 extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are needed. Maybe the offering of the Precious Blood should be re considered. Holy Communion under one form with one priest and three Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion might make more sense. This eliminates the need to purify 10 or 11 chalices after Holy Communion.

“Too many people at Mass”?

How can this be a bad thing? The number of EMs is determined by parish size to handle the crowd size who shows up. We should be glad that it is that full to begin with.

What I see is most parishes instituting dual-roles for laypeople. Some with have two ministries (or even more) during mass to both be a EM and a Sacristan.

My Pastor knows the situation does not consider this wrong, and I doubt I can change his mind. I will not make an issue of it. I have mentioned other situations which I felt were problematic. Some instances were received well, and other times the messenger was shot. I feel it is more prudent not to address it at this time—maybe at a later date.

Jesus did not think twice before He gave His life for us.
What are you afraid of?

Oh, I am not afraid, but sometimes an intended good can do more harm than good. If he will not change, and takes my complaint as a criticism, what good have I done, and I may alieninate him to any other comment which may be more important. As I said, I will see if he seems more open at a later date,

You know what I meant. When there are a very large number of people at a Mass.

I presume Br Rich meant a kind of reference to GIRM 283, which says, in part and with emphasis: "The Diocesan Bishop is also given the faculty to permit Communion under both kinds whenever it may seem appropriate to the priest to whom, as its own shepherd, a community has been entrusted, provided that the faithful have been well instructed and there is no danger of profanation of the Sacrament or of
Code:
the rite's becoming difficult because of the large number of participants
or some other reason."

If there are so many in the congregation (wonderful!) that it will be difficult to follow the rubrics for purifying the vessels, perhaps the priest should reconsider offering the chalice?

Where do you attend that the Masses are crowded and scheduled close together? It was that way 40 years ago, but now many parishes have only 1 or 2 Masses on Sunday, scheduled hours apart. I sincerely would like to know where they are crowded. I’d love to see that again.

You can get all the info on the USCCB website. Just look under Liturgy and EMHC. It is all there. There is a letter from the Vatican.

We have 5 mass between 8 & 1;15 on Sunday, 2 Sat eve & 1 Sunday eve.

Yes, it is a large parish.
