I remember several of these sisters who have died. I remember their faces and their voices. They were some of my teachers in grade school. They were much younger then (as was I), but they have aged gracefully and their remarkable photos show their inner beauty even in their advanced age. I am tearing up thinking of them.
If you notice, most of these dear women were of Polish descent. Many were the daughters of first generation Poles who came to the Detroit area during and following WWII. Strong and proud people – and faithful! Their faith was like a beacon in the darkness.
This death toll must be gutting thier convent because it had, over the years, become a sort of retirement home for the Detroit area Felicians. The order, in this area at least, had ceased growing. I don’t think they anticipated that, and it became harder and harder for them to sustain themselves financially. These last few years have been trying for them. Even though the convent and grounds are still quite beautiful - it ultimately has become a final resting place before the Lord called them home.
With age comes death, and the COVID prowls about seeking the aged with an iron tenacity with which the larger part of our population is still unfamiliar. It’s troubling to the heart, but in the closed quarters of a convent, the COVID finds its victims. God bless these dear women!
