She is my 12-year old daughter and is in full-blown anorexia nervosa.
Those of you who know about this disorder know that it occurs among very intelligent and disciplined girls and women.
She is uncommonly intelligent, introspective, and sensitive beyond her years. She has also in therapy for depression and anxiety, which go hand-in-hand with the anorexia diagnosis.
She thinks this is the price she must pay for wanting to become a successful model. Her self-confidence is nowhere near being able to handle the stress of that kind of competition; the only thing she’s doing is slowly killing herself.
Her therapist put it all on the line yesterday and gave her 48 hours to increase her caloric intake, or she would give the order to commit our daughter. Last night Camille showed how dire the pathology is, as she could not even eat a piece of toast with a thin veneer of peanut butter spread over it- “I just can’t get fat! I won’t do it!”
Her mother and I have been praying the St. Jude’s Novena for weeks now and are at a loss to provide any alternative to (name removed by moderator)atient treatment of this horror.
She also has serious, deep-seated anger issues with me over some major mistakes I have made with her and with the family (long since absolved); she doesn’t even want me in the house and thinks her mother is “weak” for not throwing me out for good. She has, so far, refused to get all of this long-suppressed anger out at me in a one-on-one or group setting, but I maintain that I am ready to talk when she is.
I realize the long-term ramifications of our sins ought to be enough to keep us from committing them in the first place, but I could have never seen this happening. Please hold us up in prayer…
St. Jude- Pray for us.
St. Joseph- Pray for us.
St. Luke- Pray for us.
St. Dymphna- Pray for us.
St. John of God- Pray for us.
