I have a son who is slightly autisitic (asperger’s syndrome) and has adhd and a daughter with adhd. On top of that my husband suffers with boughts of depression. So, in our house we have good days and bad days.

Today, my son is having a bad day at school. He kicked a teacher. He’s only 6 years old, so he probably didn’t hurt the teacher very much. Who knows why he did it? It could be a slight change in medications. It could be that his schedule has changed a little because he went on a field trip yesterday. It could just be that the weather is changing and he’s feeling antsy because school is almost out for the summer. But I received a call about half an hour ago from the principal telling me about the incident. I asked the principal to tell my son that there would be consequences at home. That means he’ll lose tv and probably video games for at least two days.

I called my husband to let him know about it. His response was very coldblooded. He suggested that it was time to send my son to a military academy nearby because that would be the only way to keep my son from growing up to be a serial killer. Now–this incident was very out of the ordinary for my son. Normally he loves school and is a good boy. I could understand my husband being a little ticked off at my son, but the idea of sending my son to a military academy is just about the most atrocious thing I’ve ever heard. He’s six years old for goodness sake. He doesn’t normally get violent or even agitated and he doesn’t generally try to hurt people.

For the past couple of years, I’ve been dragging my son to specialists trying to figure out what the problem is. I’ve been sitting in on meetings at school trying to make sure that he gets the kind of accomodations he needs. All in all, it’s been a very good school year. But in all of this, my husband has almost never accompanied me. He went to a psychologist with me once and didn’t go again the next 10 times. He’s never met my son’s pediatrician. He’s only been to one IEP meeting at school. He doesn’t communicate with my son’s teachers on a daily basis like I do. He hasn’t worried about what affect all of this (my kids and my husbands health problems) have had on me and my state of mind.

No. Instead he’s spent the past 6 years of my son’s life feeling sorry for himself and leaving me to forge a path for my kids in life. I’m so angry right now I could break something. At this moment, I really and truly hate my husband. There was one point a couple of years ago where I stopped being scared of being alone and swore that I would do whatever I needed to do for my kids even if it meant separating them from their father. But we’ve worked on our marriage and I really thought that things are better.

But this comment about sending my six-year old son away to live in a military academy just hurts so much. At the moment, I just feel mentally paralyzed. I generally try not to take action when I’m angry. I’m at work and I want to go home and be with my kids. But really, the last place I want to be is home because he’ll be there and I just can’t explain to you how angry I am at the moment. I’ve tried so hard to be patient with everyone, including myself. I’ve made suggestions to my husband that have resulted in him going on antidepressants and getting help for his sleep apnia. I even went on Weight Watchers to encourage him to do it as well. He needs to lose about 100 pounds. In the time I’ve been on WW, he’s gained 20 pounds and I’ve lost 10.

I really don’t want to walk away from him. I’m not afraid of being alone and I’m not going to stay with him just for the kids. I truly believe that we got married for better or worse and that my kids need their father. I do love him very much. But right now, I’d like to toss him off a very tall building and just collect the insurance money.

I’m sorry if that sounds cold. But I feel very isolated and alone right now. I know that in reality, I’m not. That God is with me more in my depression than he is in my happiness and that there’s a reason why this is happening. I just wish I had some answers or at least had some peace.

Remember, in the bible, it says that those who mourn will laugh one day, have hope, and know God loves you and we are praying.

I am letting you I am praying, because I have been where you have been. I am letting you know, because you are the one who seems to be doing all the work, and you don’t feel your husband understands how much you do (he might not).

But you should know the odds are good that the military school in all probability take your son. My son is schizophrenic, and no boarding school would take him, not even a military one.

Is there a support group in your area for either the ADHD or the autism? You might want to check it out. It’s good to be able to vent with others in the same boat, and maybe get some resources, such as a sitting service or some such.

Well, I have an update for you.

Husband called me back and asked me “when did you stop loving me and knowing me?” He said that his previous statement was a joke and that since I didn’t get it, it’s my fault and therefore I don’t love him anymore.

I know verbal abuse when I hear it.

The only thing I can do in this situation is to refuse to accept this line of reasoning and not give him to comfort he would have were I to accept blame. How and why do people resort to this kind of thing when they’re in the wrong? I know he loves me, which is the kicker.

I need a break.

**Outinchicagoburbs **and mini gerbel, thanks for your thoughts and prayers!

You are hurting very badly right now. I think many of us have been there. I will add you and your family to my daily prayer intentions. Please hang in there. We’ll all pray very hard for your situation. Take care of your kids and yourself! God bless.

I can completely understand your pain. I have a son that suffers from severe ADHD and several other disorders (He is adopted and born to drug parents). I understand being frustrated with everyone, especially those who are closest to you. It seems that you do all the work and they do nothing to help. They (husbands) just sit and complain about things when they go wrong. Never acknowledging when things go right.

Just remember that God made men different for a reason. They need to be able to function outside the home and children environment.

I’m sure he gets frustrated too. Just calm down and pray!

I’m praying for you so hard right now! Hold that temper!

God made men different for a reason. Well, sometimes I really wish God would tell me what and why!

I feel better. I received an apology when I got home. But I’d still appreciate a prayer or two for us. God has piled much on our plate.

Please help our friend and her husband with their difficulties.
Please God, help parents to survive and flourish, day by day, when they have children with conditions that may cause behavioural problems. Please help the children to deal with the sometimes distressing frustrations resulting from their conditions.

Dear Mom I have a grandson who has ADHD. When he was five and six, he scratched a couple of cars. He was before the headmaster every day. Gradually, as my son struggled (alone) to help him and obtain help for his learning and behavioural difficulties, he improved. Sometimes my son was at the end of his endurance with worry. However, his boy turned into a beautiful, pleasant, courteous, and helpful 15 year-old

It’s naughty of me, but this made me chuckle “But right now, I’d like to toss him off a very tall building and just collect the insurance money.” Yeah, but you wouldn’t… It can help to vent a little sometimes. It’s not cold when you feel like that, it’s desperation. I recall a couple of times that I felt hate for my husband for his endless anger and criticism, and I confessed to my priests, who kindly said, “Feelings are not right or wrong. It’s what you do with them that may be.” You wouldn’t seriously wish him harm. And your husband just felt so desperate about his son."

For you and your family…

Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

As a father of 10 year old twins who are both on the autistic spectrum, I can appreciate your struggles. Compounded with the feeling that you are handling this alone, it must be very difficult for you. I will add you and your familiy to my daily intentions.

As I tell my wife sometimes, your son is a gift from God and He will give you the grace to handle him. Your challenge is to accept that grace and constantly turn to the Lord for help and guidance. The grace of the sacrament of marriage is also very strong. Please remember this as you encounter any difficulties in your family life. Also, ask the Holy Spirit to increase the gift of wisdom in your soul, so that you may make the correct decisions.

God Bless,
Gary
