Please pray for me so I can communicate more

Please pray for my girlfriend and I to work things out.

Most of our fights stem from me not communicating with her enough. Like when we have an argument, I don’t try hard enough to solve it. However, I do solve it in my mind, I just have trouble communicating that to her, thus she thinks I don’t want to solve any of our arguments and gets even madder.

I don’t know what it is, some days I’m on par with everything communication-wise, then other days I just feel overburden and like I can’t say anything.

Any thoughts on how I could solve an argument with her more effectively when one of these ‘dumbstruck’ moments hits me? I love my girlfriend dearly, and know for a fact that we are meant to be together (we have been for 7 years already), but every time I don’t try and solve one of our fights, she feels like I don’t care about how she feels, which is not true.

Please help and pray for me.

I know, firsthand, how difficult communication problems can be within a relationship. It’s helpful to keep in mind that the other person can never know what we feel / believe / think until we voice them. Otherwise, the other person feels ignored/rejected because we are not expressing our true feelings.

It must be a conscious effort to reveal on the outside what’s on the inside in order to help our relationships grow.

You may even preface it by saying, “You know that I’m not very good with my words, but this is how I feel…” I’m sure if she’s been with you for so long, she’ll understand your difficulties expressing your thoughts and will appreciate all the more your attempts to work on your communication issues.

I see from your post that God has already begun to grant you the wisdom and insight for the answer you seek.
 
Praying that you may communicate as needed in your relationships, and communicate well with truth and love.
 
You might consider using a DER script:

D–Describe:
In as few words as possible describe what you feel is the problem. Use “I” statement.
ex: I don’t like when you arrive late without texting to let me know.

E–Emotion:
In as few words as possible name the emotion you are feeling. Use “I” statement.
ex: I feel frustrated and unimportant when you do that.

R–Request:
In as few words as possible request what it is you want. Use “Would you please” statement.
ex: Would you please try to be on time and text me if you’re running late?

Then the other person repeats it back so they know they’ve been heard.

Okay, so what I hear you saying is:
You don’t like when I’m late and when I don’t text you to let you know how long I’ll be.
It makes you feel frustrated and like you’re not important to me when I do that.
So you’d like me to try to be on time more often and text you if I’m running late?

Then they apologize and assure any change necessary. SINCERITY IS MANDATORY! 😉

Sure, I can see why that would make you feel like you’re not important to me and frustrated and I don’t want to make you feel that way, honey, because you are important to me. I’m sorry, hun. Would you please forgive me?
And yeah, I’ll make an effort to be on time for you and be sure to text you if I’m running late okay?

St. Augustine, pray for us. I would suggest writing out your feelings on paper, and giving her that. Explain how you can “freeze” and why you want to communicate better but can’t - yet. 🙂
