Please pray for my friend who is an atheist. We have been close friends for 10 years, up until a month ago, when I started to explore becoming Catholic. Rather than explain all the details, I’ve just quoted part of what happened, from my other thread, below. She has not spoken to me since that phone call nearly a month ago, and not responded to the 2 emails I’ve sent. This morning I’ve been thinking of her and I really hope she is OK. Still puzzled by her extreme reaction. Please pray for her.

From: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=332683
I get a call on my cell phone, from my friend, the one I mentioned in my initial post who is an atheist. I probably shouldn’t have, but she asked me how things were going, and she is one of my closest friends (we’ve been friends for 10 years), so I told her I had been to see the priest.
So wow… her reaction was horrible. Really over the top. She was absolutely incensed with me. She threatened to not allow me to see her kids anymore if I continued with this! She has two little boys and I am basically an auntie to them. I reminded her how the sisters had helped my mother and I when I was a kid. But she was really sarcastic about it and said, “yeah they helped you all right, gave you a bowl of soup with one hand and shook the bible in your face with another… they never got your mother off the streets either… they called the cops on you when you ran away… I suppose you’re going to become a nun now too and go to India…” etc, etc… She called Mother Teresa a “crazy old b***” and told me about a book which exposes the Missionaries of Charity as frauds. Then I said to her, “I’ll talk to you when you are more calm” and hung up. I’m really not good with angry people…
I was stunned. She’s never been that upset with me or that hurtful in the 10 years we’ve known each other. And its puzzling to me also, as she has no Catholic background or experiences that I am aware of, so why she would be taking it so personally is beyond me. I’m still puzzled by her overreaction. Not sure what’s going to happen to our friendship, but I think I’ll leave her alone for a bit and let her call me if and when she’s ready.

Dear Susan, I’m sad that you have lost a friendship and that your friend feels you have betrayed her, but as the alternative is to betray yourself and God who loves you and has pursued you. Just as it took years before the prayers of the Sisters bore fruit, so may it take time before your friend responds to the graces of your intercession for her. Perhaps you are the only person that she has who will pray for her personally. Perhps there has never been anyone else.
Dear God, please greatly bless Susan’s prayers for her friend through the years.
Please continue to draw Susan more deeply into Your love and life.
Thank You, our God, for Your kindness and love for Susan/Judith.

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.
Amen.

PRAYER TO INFANT JESUS
O Miraculous Infant Jesus, look upon us, as we, turn to you, imploring your assistance in our needs and anxieties. Let your compassionate heart be moved to pity by our supplications and grant us the favour which we ardently implore you. Free us from all afflictions and despair, all trials and misfortunes and give us your support and consolation so that we may praise you and the Father and the Holy Spirit now and for ever, Amen.

Praying for her …

Hail Mary,

and blessed is the Fruit Of Thy Womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.

Dear Lord, please help this atheist friend convert. May she find in Susan_Calvin (Judith) a light to lead her to Christ. Maybe a very long time will pass before Susan_Calvin’s friend will talk to Susan_Calvin (or Judith) again, but I pray that one day her atheist friend will respond with love in return to her call to friendship. Atheists hate Your light, o Lord, and like to remain in the darkness where they don’t come close to You or Your joy. It is no wonder Susan_Calvin’s friend is so hostile. May her atheist friend come to know You by the Holy Spirit acting in Susan_Calvin’s life. May Susan_Calvin not be sad over the relationship gone dead, but persevere to follow the inspirations of the Holy Spirit and look in to Catholicism with all eagerness and readiness to learn and follow in the footsteps of Yours, sweet Jesus. May Susan_Calvin continue to pray for her atheist friend and children and may she find new relationships in the meantime to offer her the support she used to get from her atheist friend. May her atheist friend come around to embrace truth with love for Judith and Jesus. Amen.

Susan_Calvin, your real name is Judith, I hope. Otherwise my last post doesn’t really make as much sense as it should.😊

Yes, my real name is Judith.
the phoenix:
Greetings Dr. Susan Calvin of US Robots and Mechanical Men, Inc:
As the phoenix eludes to, Dr. Susan Calvin is a fictional character from Isaac Asimov’s Robot Series: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Calvin. She works with robots; in real life, I have a similar career, working with robots as a robotics software engineer. Hence the username. If you’re not a fan of Asimov and/or a geek I guess its easy to miss! 😉 Sorry for the confusion.

Thank you all for the prayers for my friend, I very much appreciate it.

We have a God whose “strength does not lie in numbers, nor Your might in violent men, since You are God of the humble, the help of the oppressed, the support of the weak, the refuge of the forsaken, the saviour of the despairing.” [Judith 9:14-16]

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus
Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell; the third day He
rose again from the dead; He ascended
into heaven, is seated at the right hand of
God the Father Almighty; from thence He
shall come to judge the living and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the
Holy Catholic Church, the communion of
Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and life
everlasting. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth, as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Thank you again to everyone for the prayers. I’ve started praying for her now too, though I feel a bit inadequate about it. In any event I appreciate it and I will update you if I hear anything from her.

"Most compassionate Jesus, You are the Light of the whole world. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who do not believe in God and of those who as yet do not know You. Let the rays of Your grace enlighten them that they, too, together with us, may extol Your wonderful mercy; and do not let them escape from the abode which is Your Most Compassionate Heart.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who do not believe in You, and of those who as yet do not know You, but who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Draw them to the light of the Gospel. These souls do not know what great happiness it is to love You. Grant that they, too, may extol the generosity of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen."

–from the Divine Mercy Novena, Fourth Day

p.s.

Do not lose Hope for your friend. Her anger itself may be a sign that she believes in God more than she is willing to admit, even to herself. After all, few people become that angry or remain that angry at something or someone they don’t really believe in, right? Trust that Our Lord, in His good time, will speak to your friend in the deepest recesses of her heart and give her the graces she needs to believe. Always have prayerful Hope for your dear friend!
