May God protect and care for your dear little cat, and give him his strenth back if that is His will. Please let us know how he does.

An update:

I went to visit Cosmo tonight, and they’re still not sure what’s wrong. The vet is going to do blood tests and x-rays tonight, and doesn’t really want to speculate on what could be the problem until he has more information to go on.

Cosmo stands on all four feet properly now, but still can’t coordinate his legs if he tries to walk in his cage. Mind you, having one leg wrapped in a bandage with the IV in doesn’t help him in that regard. The vet gave him some Valium to make him relax and get him to eat, and it seems to be working - he ate well before I arrived (normally he won’t eat at the vet’s), and had a few more tries at the food while I was there.

He still doesn’t seem to know who I am, really … it’s rather like the first few hours after a cat has come out of anaesthetic, where they’re wide-eyed, alert and functioning normally, but none of their usual personality is there. It’s like someone else is walking around in his fur. He’s pleasant and calm … but he’s not Cosmo, not even a scared-to-be-at-the-vet Cosmo.

Bless you all for your prayers - you have been a huge comfort to me. http://bestsmileys.com/hugging/1.gif

I am very allergic to cats and have two, yes, two inside cats. I will pray for your kitty.

Hail, Mary, full of grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Thank you, dear Quackers!
You’re welcome. 🙂 I’ll be watching the thread for updates. I’m glad he seems to have made at least some improvement so far. I love animals, so I understand how you feel right now.

Bless your dear heart … I’m allergic to cats too. We have ten of them (inside cats). We are insane. 😃

Thank you so much for your prayers!

Aww, thank you. beaming There is hope - I’m just going to post an update for everyone now!

Another update, as I’ve just returned from spending a couple of hours at the vet with little Cosmo.

My timing was good; there are two vets at my clinic, and this time I got to talk to the one that had been spending more time with Cosmo. He said not to worry too much YET - he’d recently had a cat in worse condition than Cosmo, and after 4 days of treating the cat with steroids, the cat walked away completely cured.

And after I’d been there for an hour, another doctor showed up. He turned out to be a visiting friend of the first vet - and an animal neurologist. He watched Cosmo stumble about, and did some tests on him, and confirmed that he’d definitely suffered a mini-stroke (although we’re waiting for the x-ray, and possibly a blood test, for additional confirmation - they’re looking to see if there’s a visible blood clot or brain lesion. Cosmo was VERY miffed indeed about being x-rayed, so they were only able to get one view of his little head) - the problem is all on the left side of his body.

As for his not seeming to recognize me? Right now, he’s blind in his left eye. We’re not sure how well the right one is working, but there’s definitely not much of anything going on with the left. He’s fairly befuddled, so in the absence of being able to get a really good LOOK at me, he’s probably having trouble associating my sound and scent with ‘mum’, I guess.

Another good side is that he’s too confused to be particularly stressed about being at the vet, even though he’s next door (cubicle-wise) to a particularly noisy puppy. chuckling

The neurologist, too, says not to worry too much YET; cats do better than people at recovering after a stroke, apparently - the blood supply sorts itself out… er … BETTER than ours does. Apparently this is relatively common in animals with heart problems, and poor Cosmo has quite a bad heart murmur (he’s been on medication for it for a couple of years now).

So improvement isn’t visible, but within a few days we could see something. There IS hope, at least.

Bless you all for your kindness to me, and your prayers for dear Cosmo! :grouphug: And thank you, dearest Lord, for taking care of the dear little fellow and giving me hope. :signofcross:

It’s sounding better. My mother’s dog suffered a stroke two months ago, and he was in awful condition for about the first week. He gradually improved, though, and he is doing remarkably well now. He’s almost back to his old self. And he was paralyzed and couldn’t walk at all when he had his stroke. So there definitely is hope for your cat! I think God makes animals more resilient than humans sometimes because He knows animals can’t speak and express their pains and maladies like we can. 🙂

Hey, that’s GREAT news - thank you! A real-life testimonial! 🙂

Yes, thank goodness animals are tougher than us … I took my Hobbes in last week to have his teeth cleaned and have his rump ‘expressed’, thinking I was just doing a bit of preventative maintenance (he’s been purring and happy and eating well all along). Yes, well … he had to have FOUR teeth pulled, including one where the gum had receeded so badly that the ROOT was exposed, and his poor rump glands (I have a feeling I won’t be able to use the a-word without it turning into ‘****’ here laughing) were actually INFECTED. Hobbes never showed a sign of that at all. Poor little meatball.

And he’s fine now too. Amazing, isn’t it?

Thank you, dear Quackers - you’ve cheered me up! 🙂 LOVELY nickname, by the way - I like that very much. 😃

Animals are resilient, and amazing. I’ve been amazed several times at how they can recover so quickly from illnesses and injuries, and even cope with them before receiving medical care. I’m glad Hobbes is fine. My beagle, Fred, has “cherry eye.” Even though it isn’t causing any symptoms right now (according to his vet, who I trust completely) I’m going to have it removed as soon as I can in order to prevent any possible trouble in the future. I’m glad I was able to cheer you up! 🙂 I’ll keep watching this thread for updates!

And by the way, my mother’s dog, Fidget, is running, barking, playing, and getting into all kinds of trouble. Two months after having a stroke!

How many cats do you have, BTW? I have three dogs: Zach, Dolly, and Fred. All in the house. 🙂

Oh, and thanks for the compliment! My screen name is based on an old nickname I used to have in my previous church, when I working with the youth group. A girl in the youth group made it up, and it stuck.

Most happy to read you have some hope for Cosmo…hoping and praying that things will unfold happily for you both…
I sure know what it is to treat pets like children and one of the family…
St Francis please watchover Cosmo
Lord please hear our prayers

Aww, bless your heart - I’ve seen cherry eye, and it looks quite terrifying, so that’s lovely that you’re going to get the little fellow sorted out! Fred is the perfect name for a beagle. chortling I’m ‘aunt’ to my friend Diane’s demented beagle, Finnigan - he’s a handful, and quite wonderful!

Thank you, dear! 🙂 Tonight he doesn’t seem more mobile (the vet thinks so, I’m afraid I don’t), but he really enjoyed his cuddles this time, and ate TONS for me. He won’t eat on his own - I think he’s having trouble both seeing and smelling the food - but he loved eating the tinned mush out of my hand, bless his furry heart. Ate like a horse, then flopped down and fell asleep with a smile on his fuzzy face, so that made me feel better.

Isn’t that marvelous! 😃 I ran into a friend at the vet’s today - she runs a cat shelter - and she was saying that EVERY kitty of hers that’s had a stroke (she has over 300 at any given time, so it’s been a few) has always recovered completely… even one that had multiple strokes, and whom I’ve seen and would never have guessed!
How many cats do you have, BTW?
sheepishly Ten. Yup, ten indoor cats. My mum lives with me, and rescues strays … the majority end up at the shelter, but the ones with health or emotional issues stay with us. (the exception is a kitten I adopted from the vet 4 months ago, hoping to cheer Cosmo a bit when he was pining after one of ours that died) 5 boys and 5 girls!
I have three dogs: Zach, Dolly, and Fred. All in the house. 🙂
Aren’t you an excellent puppy parent! 🙂 I love your dogs’ names - are they all beagles?

HOWL! 😃 I think it’s adorable - very endearing!

🙂 Thank you so very much! http://bestsmileys.com/hugging/1.gif Cosmo is, at least, not distressed about being at the vet (I guess that’s one good thing about being befuddled after a stroke), and he’s responding more to affection, so I’m taking that as a good sign!

St Gertrude of Nivelles, patron saint of cats and those who love cats, pray to the Lord Our God for dear little Cosmo, and for his family. Pray too, for wisdom & understanding for the vets as they treat Cosmo, so that he may be restored to those who love him.
Amen.

PS: My Miss Lily Daisy is queen of the house; I love cats so very much! I get that from my Daddy…who, while, we’re at it: “Daddy, please pray for Cosmo & his family. Thank you!!”

LOL, “Fred” just seemed to suit him! 🙂

If he’s eating, that’s a good sign, though.

I spoke with a friend of mine, and he said he knows of a lot of cats who have strokes, too, and recover fully. Maybe strokes are common with cats? I don’t know.

The legal limit is 5 animals indoors here, so I would never be able to have 10 of anything in the house. I guess that’s good, because I love animals and wouldn’t be able to stop myself without the limit.
Aren’t you an excellent puppy parent! 🙂 I love your dogs’ names - are they all beagles?
Fred is a beagle, and Dolly and Zach are beagle/black lab mixes. I rescued them all from the local SPCA. Fred was about to be euthanized. No one wanted him because of his cherry eye. The woman at the SPCA said that he had a maximum of one month left if no one adopted him. (He had been there for two months.) So I took him. He’s a year old, and small. 13". Dolly and Zach were dumped over the fence at the SPCA, along with their siblings, in the middle of the night. The SPCA workers found the puppies injured and whimpering the next morning. The siblings were adopted quickly, but Dolly and Zach weren’t. They each had about a week left when I adopted them. I also adopted a beautiful, sweet male cat named Chance. He only had a few days left before being euthanized. I had him neutered, got his shots, and gave him to a woman I know, the widow of a Protestant minister. I gave him to her because I’m allergic to cats. (I just didn’t want him to be euthanized.) She’s a wonderful woman, and she gives me updates on him.
