I have a soft spot for the name, for some reason … I don’t remember WHY Fred became our all-purpose name for everything (‘we’, back then - the late 70’s and early 80’s - being me, my sister, and her boyfriend at the time), but the car was named Fred, stuffed animals were named Fred, EVERYTHING that needed a name was a Fred … %-)LOL, “Fred” just seemed to suit him!
It should be, huh? No improvement on the walking front yet, and he still doesn’t show any signs of seeing through that left eye, but he still seems comfortable and happy. I trimmed his claws tonight to hopefully help him when he DOES try to walk …
I don’t know either … I guess having heart problems didn’t help him there.
grin I don’t know what the limit is here (I just don’t remember), although it’s definitely less than 10. We invited the local humane society to inspect the house a few years back, though, and they have no problem with us having the ten, thank goodness!

Good grief … sounds like most of the SPCAs out here, too - the poor animals just don’t stand a chance, even if they do make it to the SPCA!

Good, I’m glad! I hate to see homeless animals! There’s an organization in my area that does greyhound rescue. I’d love to get one, but I just don’t have the room.

I don’t understand how people could do something like that to a defenseless animal. I see news reports on TV about people abusing animals and children, and I just shake my head. What kind of hatred has to be in someone’s heart in order to do something like that?People can be jerks.
I know, it’s awful. The SPCAs here are undertaking a massive fundraising drive to raise money for new facilities. They’re trying to put an end to all euthanizations. They want to be able to keep all animals until they’re adopted.

Ew, it’s quite a political situation here. Some years ago, various local municipalities started considering having someone other than the SPCA handle animal control for their areas … and those SPCA branches that weren’t already replaced are feeling quite threatened, I think. And with some justification, because there usually IS one or more privately-run shelters angling to take over their contracts. Our own area, in fact, had that happen - a privately-operated humane society took over from the SPCA, following a big scandal where the SPCA wanted to put a dog down after it panicked and badly bit one of their handlers … the handler herself ended up stealing the dog from the SPCA and taking it outside the SPCA’s jurisdiction to be adopted, so it wouldn’t be killed. Apparently it’s the gentlest dog going - it was just scared, and in a bad situation when it bit her.

I’m glad that woman stole the dog! The SPCAs there sound totally different than the ones here where I live! The ones here go out of their way to give the animals as much time as possible, although they will euthanize them after about three months or so. I hope they can succeed in stopping that soon. I do too… I think if more people were aware of the problems they face, they might not be as quick to judge them uncharitably - and then, perhaps, the SPCA’s own attitude might be a bit less difficult. It’s a rather vicious circle!

They said this does happen occasionally, but they’re a bit worried he might have calicivirus, and were anxiously checking his mouth where he’d been licking the affected paw, but so far, no sores in his mouth. Hopefully that continues (they put a cone on his head just to be safe… what a combination - blind in one eye, and now his visibility is further reduced by the cone!). He’s not impressed, anyway - he cried heartily when they were bathing the paw in Hibitane to keep it from getting infected.I agree.Probably not … but then, I’m not sure we’d be human if we didn’t think them!
Of course, I’m not giving my approval to stealing. (The Ten Commandments do tell us not to steal, after all.) However, I’m glad this woman took the dog. She was justified. I would have done the same thing if I had been in that position. And yes, I agree, it is a vicious circle. I hate it that so many animals are euthanized every year.

Today he’s not doing so well… they took the IV out (of his GOOD front paw), and where the bandage had been, his foot and front leg are swollen to about twice their normal size, very red and crusty, and damp.
Poor little mite.
On a happier note, I brought him some soft, low beds from home so that he’d stop sleeping in the litter box (HOW he manages to get himself in there to sleep, I don’t know!)… he wouldn’t use the bed when I was there, but I just phoned and the vet says he’s sprawled out in it now, sleeping happily.
So I’m still praying there will be an improvement!

I know kind of how you feel. I love my pets too and I have a cat who is kind of sickly. I’ll pray for you and your cat.I’m sorry, if anyone feels it’s inappropriate to pray for animals, I certainly understand, and don’t mean to offend you.
But my dear 10-year-old Cosmo has had issues for quite a few months, getting horribly anemic and not eating or drinking on his own for the longest time. I’ve slowly nursed him to where he’s put on weight, recovered from the anemia, and eats at least a bit of dry food (I give him tons of tinned food, and water through a syringe), and last night he was finally able to go to the vet to have his teeth cleaned - which is, we believe, the reason he had all this other trouble, because his teeth were in very bad shape.
His teeth were done at 11pm last night; I picked him up today at 5pm, and … well, I don’t know if he’s had a stroke, is just having a hard time recovering from the anaesthetic, or what. At the vet, his legs just give out underneath him, one at a time … or he’ll walk, but one or more legs just stay still until he does a face plant on the ground. He doesn’t seem to be feeling his legs properly. At home he’s even worse - he just goes round and round in circles, falling down.
He’s back at the vet now, on IV fluids (he’s a fragile cat, so perhaps he’s dehydrated, and that wouldn’t help).
Please pray that dear little Cosmo will either be okay, or if he can’t be, that he at least dies painlessly in his sleep. He won’t be able to survive at home otherwise. And he’s such a dear little fellow - he mothers all our other cats.
