My 93 year old grandma (a Catholic) has been declining for the last couple years and is pretty frail. She has now come down with a very bad case of shingles. Though the doctor has not said this would be fatal, he does not think she will fully recover. She is very depressed and angry.
My mother and father have taken her into their home to care for her. The are both deists or maybe agnostics. Anyway, they are very bitter and angry about my grandma’s suffering. Mom lashed out at me tonight about how I can believe in “a God who permits this kind of suffering”.

My request is that you pray for the healing of my grandma in mind, body and soul. If it be God’s will that she should still suffer, pray that she will joyfully unite her sufferings to Christ and that she will not become angry at God. Please pray that somehow this will turn my parents toward the love of the Lord and not away from Him.

Thank you Prayer Warriors!

From today’s Liturgy of the Hours, a short prayer quote from a psalm:

Psalm 40 (41)

Prayer in time of sickness

Blessed is he who takes thought for the helpless, for the Lord will keep him safe in time of trouble.
The Lord will guard him and give him life. He will give him good fortune on the earth, and not betray him into the power of his enemies.
The Lord will lend him strength on his bed of pain; you will transform all his sickness into health.

Praying!

I am praying very hard for everyone involved that everything will turn out for the best.

These intentions will be in my prayers.

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us, and increase Your mercy in us, so that in difficult moments we might not despair, nor become despondent, but with great confidence, submit ourselves to Your Holy Will, which is Love and Mercy itself. Amen

I remember when my Grandfather, at a similar age, had shingles. Shingles is painful. Although it is related to the childhood condition of Chicken Pox, it is not the same. I will pray for the relief of the pain for your Grandma.

Chronic pain, or even pain that is not chronic but still long-standing, is often the source of depression. Please understand that about your Grandma. If she seems difficult on one day or another, it may be the “pain” talking, not really “her”.

It is hard to be in chronic pain. It is so much better if those you love understand about the pain you endur. Please be patient with your Grandma.

I know that your mother’s accusation and the anger and hurt of your parents and grandma only add to the sadness you already have to see your grandmother suffering. My mother-in-law got shingles and it was the beginning of her decline also.

I pray that you do not lose heart in the painful reality and mystery of your grandmother’s illness and of your family’s hurt, anger, and depression. I ask God to keep your heart and faith safe.

I pray for the healing of your “grandma in mind, body and soul. If it be God’s will that she should still suffer, pray that she will joyfully unite her sufferings to Christ and that she will not become angry at God.” I pray “that somehow this will turn my parents toward the love of the Lord and not away from Him.”

Please take care of yourself in this difficult time, Trishie

“I think that what we suffer in this life can never be compared to the glory, as yet unrevealed, which is waiting for us.” [Romans 8:18]

“Happy the person who stands firm when trials come. He has proved himself, and will win the prize of life, the crown that the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” [James 1:12]

“Through your faith, God’s power will guard you until the salvation which has been prepared is revealed…to bear being plagued by all sorts of trials; so that, when Jesus Christ is revealed, your faith will have been tested and proved like gold.” [1Peter 1:5-7]

“Console yourself with the Lord’s promise to repay ‘twice over with blessing’ for all we have suffered.” [Zechariah 9:12]

“Yes, the troubles which are soon over…train us for a weight of eternal glory which is out of all proportion to them.” [1Corinthians 4:17]

Therefore, “be patient…until the Lord’s coming. Think of a farmer, how patiently he waits for the precious fruit of the ground until it has the autumn rains and the spring rains. [James 5:7]

Thank you all for your prayers and kind words.

They hospitalized my grandma last night because she couldn’t get up. She was just too weak. However, she seems to be resting comfortably in the care of professionals.

:blessyou:

Prayer Warrior, Make sure that you have a Priest give her the Annointing of the Sick, if you haven’t already, Jesus will help her through her sufferings.
I will pray for her, you and your parents. God bless you.

For your grandmother, I pray that there will be healing and restoration of her mind, body, and spirit. And if it is the will of God that she must suffer, may she bear the trials patiently, uniting them to the sufferings of Christ on the cross. Be sure to find a priest who can give her the Anointing of the Sick.

For your parents, my hope and prayer is that they will “listen heedfully” to the Lord’s call, so that they may return to Him with penitent and contrite hearts. May they not persist in their unbelief, but believe that God has a plan for all things.

Holy Spirit, be the strength and consolation of Prayer_Warrior’s heart and soul. Call them gently to rest in You so that You may give them spiritual refreshment. May Prayer_Warrior be given the living water to quench their thirst and be an example of Christian living for their parents and grandmother.

All these things I ask in Jesus’ Name, through His Mother, Mary Immaculate. Amen. :crossrc:
