We went to see him last weekend. (We live 600kms away). He is looking unwell, as expected, from the chemo. He is very tired and somewhat nauseous. His pregnant wife is trying to cheer him up by equating their physical symptoms. He is participating in the pregnancy, not being poisoned by chemo. I think it does help him. His spirits are still high.

He has put away the silverware and is using plastic because the metal ‘tastes’ unpleasant. He also has a bit of difficulty taking things out of the refrigerator. I think he said they call it cold numbness. He didn’t believe the doctor when warned about it so was quite unpleasantly surprised when getting a bottle of gatorade out of the fridge. His entire arm went numb, just touching the cold bottle, and he dropped the it, luckily, back in the fridge.

The strange things that chemo does to you.

Me, I fluctuate between accepting it with serenity and dissolving in unconsolable grief. At this point, I’m giving it all to God, even when I break down and weep.I feel much the same as when he was a baby and fell seriously ill.

We were in Iran at the time, the revolution was in full swing and we were under martial law with a curfew. Between 9 pm to 6 am, no one was allowed out on the streets. It started out as a cold. I took him to the British doctors. Everything they did only made him worse. The vomiting and diarhea were so bad, he lost 3 kilos overnight. (that’s 6.6 pounds). For an eight month old baby, it was quite a significant weight loss. 6am we were out of the house to take him to the hospital. We got hauled down in a road block cause the Shah’s soldiers were not issued with watches and they did not know it was 6am. Finally got to the hospital and saw an Iranian pediatrician who immediately and correctly diagnosed him with severe gastroenteritis. He booked us both into hospital, it being matter of course for mothers to stay with their babies. I had a private room and a bed. In the main ward, the mothers were bedded down on mats on the floor beside the cribs. There was a general strike going on and there were all of 2 nurses to cover 2 floors. I had to keep track of when he was due his treatment cause they were run off their feet.

The whole time, he was in so much pain. Nothing could comfort him or give him ease. He crawled around and around the cot, trying to get away from the pain. I would pick him up to comfort him, and he would only twist and turn till I had to put him back in the crib and just watch as he screamed and crawled, screamed and crawled. I felt so helpless. My baby was wasting away before my eyes and there was absolutely nothing I could do to help him.

It is the same now. I can do absolutely nothing. Nothing except pray.

He is lapsed and I worry so much that he will be so angry with God that he will not come back to the Church and to the Sacraments. He was an EMHC when he was in high school but after he went to university, Mass seemed to hold no meaning for him.

I’ve been praying for him to return to the Church and the practice of his faith, knowing that it usually takes something severe and life threatening to bring people to their senses.

May he repent and return to Thee, O Lord, that he may live with Thee in eternity.

Linda Marie I totally understand how you are feeling.It is very frightening indeed to watch your child (no matter what age) suffer under any circumstances let alone stage 4 cancer.
My heart goes out to you.You are being so very brave and strong and I know how worried you are.(((HUGS))) for you from across the other side of the world.

This last week my 34 year old son was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer with the lymph nodes adjacent to the tumour affected.

They have finally fallen pregnant, after trying for the last 3 years and the baby is due in November.

Please pray for them, that this cancer can be beaten and that my grandchild may grow up with his/her father, that my son will fully return to the sacraments, that his wife will come to know and love God.
