Please pray for my vocation

I had hoped to enter the Order of Friars Minor next year as a postulant at the age of 18, but my mother has told me that she will not allow it and told me to finish College first. I understand that this advice is sound, and in some aspects, I know that I am not mature enough, but I’m finding this very difficult to accept, since I will have to wait another 4-5 years before entering religious life.

Please pray that God’s will would be done in my vocation, and that I would be able to wait patiently.

While your mother’s advice us sound for some, each individual is different.

Also, at the age of 18 in the U.S. you are considered an adult and therefore do not need your mother’s permission. The fourth commandment says we are to honor our parents. In this particular situation, I would say listen to your mother’s reasons and take take to prayer and with the help of a good spiritual director, you will discern God’s will, who will give you the strength to do his will.

She will not allow it? Is she going to lock you in your room? From a healthy relationship point of view – if she can control you at 18, do you honestly think that will change when you are 22?

Plus, I don’t know when you converted, but it is my understanding that many religious orders prefer that a recent convert wait before joining their orders.
