Prayers for you, whatevergirl.
God be with you and your family.

By the way, I live in Florida.

If you’re moving to the Miami area we have lots of great parishes here. St. Agatha on 107th Avenue, St. Michael the Archangel on 28th avenue & West Flagler Street, St. Louis in Pinecrest,
St. Lawrence in NMB (my home parish), St. Francis de Sales on South Beach, St. Raymond near Coral Gables (with a wonderful priest named Father Jordi Rivero) and many, many more.
What part of Florida are you moving to?
God bless,
Jaypeeto4

I’m moving about 20 miles north of Tampa Bay…and working right on the Bay…oo la la…this will be plush. lol:)

I will be making regular trips to Miami however…I’ll have to let you know when I’ll be in town.

Hi whatevergirl,
you’re moving to a nice place !!
I lived in Tampa for several years and I LOVE that city.
Once you get settled in treat yourself and for family to a nice dinner at the famous Berns Steak House near the Hyde Park section of Tampa (near downtown and the Bay).
Here is a link. They’re a bit pricey, but everybody in Tampa loves to eat at Berns.

THANK YOU! We love eating out…I also enjoyed Landry’s when I was there on a business trip last year…great view of the Bay…

I was wondering…do you know anything about Ybor City…people are telling me it’s a must see, because of the Cuban cuisine??

The Columbia (or is it Colombia?, do a google search) Restaurant in Ybor City is a very old but very famous restaurant. Ybor City is sometimes called “Cuba” City (not usually though), because the Cuban Community that settled there around the turn of the century had a lot of their businesses and cigar factories there.
It’s a beautiful and historic place to visit, but not all parts are safe, especially for women walking alone. It’s right near downtown, just on the other side of downtown Tampa. Again, great place to visit, and it has a beautiful Hilton Hotel in Ybor, but once you’re settled in to your new home, find a new neighbor or friend who is familiar with Ybor City to take you on a little tour.

And after you’ve done that, head north on I-275 to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. The Busch Gardens in Tampa’s theme is the continent of Africa, and it is a wonderful place to spend the day for the whole family. You’ll have a blast.

Back in my “worldly youth” days in the early 1980s,
Ybor City also had some wildly-popular discos, but I doubt they are there anymore now that Disco is Dead.

Hi Jaypeet–thanks so much…I will check it out for sure. I was wondering about the safety aspect…since it’s near/around the city…most cities have problems around them. I know Pittsburgh does, to a degree.

Also–one more thing…is Coconut Grove still alive and well in Miami?😃 I love love love that place!!!

Coconut Grove, or as we Miamians simply call it, “The Grove” is very much alive and well and busier than you can possibly imagine. It is very crowded and lots of shops, malls, and movie theaters galore. Great restaurants too. Nearly impossible to find a place to park, you have to sometimes be persistent cuz parking space in The Grove is at a premium.

When I was teenager in the late 1970s, Coconut Grove was a laid back, semi-Bohemian kind of place with little privately owned bookstores and boutiques, and the Coconut Grove Playhouse,
restaurants like Monty Trainor’s Village Inn and the big Monty Trainor’s restaurant over by the bay. Right inside the Coconut Grove Playhouse in 1970s was a cool restaurant/bar called
The Widow McCoy’s. It’s been gone for years. It became a
KC Cagney’s and then Bananas and I don’t know what it is now.
And of course, Coconut Grove’s most popular and down to earth restauant, The Hungry Sailor, is from what I have heard still there and doing great. The Coconut Grove Playhouse, however, is in bad need of structural repairs. It’s pretty on the ouside and on the inside, but behind the attractive walls, the building is becoming unstable. It would be a shame if the City of Miami didn’t act to save the Coconut Grove Playhouse, and I have a lot of sentimental memories of my times going to plays there. It’s very historic.
Although…the most beautiful old theatre in all of Florida is the old
Olympia Theatre on Flagler Street in downtown Miami. The interior is breathtakingly beautiful. As a child, I used to go to Saturday matinee movies at the Olympia. It’s my favorite place in the City of Miami. It is sometimes called “The Gusman Center.”
Sylvester Stallone personally put up several million dollars to help with it’s upkeep. I’m going to try to find a link to the Olympia so you can see what I’m talking about. It’s breathtaking inside.

This is a link to the website of the Olympia Theatre (the Gusman Center), Miami’s glorious Grand Lady of theatres. Wait til the picture of the interior comes up on the mainscreen and tell me it’s beauty doesn’t make you gasp. The curtain is known as The Curtain of A Thousand Jewels. I adore this place.
