Please say a prayer for all parents who are struggling with children who have behavior problems at home and at school. There is a right way to discipline to get the desired results. May they show approval and encouragement for the good behavior while showing patience and understanding when they are challenged. Take advantage of parenting classes if necessary…even if they don’t think they are needed. There is always something to learn. Children need to be accountable for their actions and become responsible adults.

You are so right. These parents and their children need prayers. Praying for them and their children.

Joining in prayers for parents to be encouraged and supported to raise well behaved children with a good moral foundation. May they take advantages of parenting resources available to them when needed.
Mary.

Eternal God , in whom mercy is endless,
and the treasury of compassion inexhastible ,
look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us ,
that in difficult moments we might not despair
nor become despondent , but with great confidence ,
submit ourselves to Your Holy Will ,
which is love and mercy itself . Amen

Memorare (Prayer to Our Lady)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

There are good priests out there who will echo this, because they were just such boys when they were small and when they were in school! There are many strong sorts of spirits that take some time to master, and it takes self-mastery in the parents to guide children of that spirit! Some very good souls start out that way, though!

Yes, I pray for the parents of such children. I pray that they may have the courage to reject the conventional “wisdom” of the day with regard to parenting. I pray that they may follow the lead of our Heavenly Father. I pray that such parents realize that they too are accountable for their actions against their children so that they may become sanctified and have eternal life.

Hail Mary,
Full of grace,
The Lord is with Thee.
Blessed art Thou amoungst women,
And blessed is the fruit of Thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of death,
Amen

I will always remember how surprised I was that a woman who was living with her granddaughter checked herself into a nursing home. This woman probably bought the house for her granddaughter in return for her “care”. The GGC were unlocking her wheelchair and letting it run down a slope and many other abuses. My best friend was putting all her grandchildren through Catholic school and her son let the GC talk so nasty to her, well nasty to everyone, but especially to her. These abuses are all caused from dysfunctions. Most people who are dysfunctional don’t recognize it. It isn’t a matter of economic status or educational status either. Isn’t it more like a lack of love? Respect? Discipline? I do pray and will continue to pray for parents and their children. For no one is happy unless they can love, show respect, and practice discipline.

My response to the title of your thread was a relieved, How timely! I’ve just bought a book written by a 19 year old detailing what it’s like to grow up with ADHD. I’ve recently been having discussions with a woman online about growing up autistic. I have twins who are diagnosed ADHD and would be diagnosed autistic had we chosen so.

I have to admit, on reading the body of your post, I wondered what prompted it, and if it was really a vent, worded as a prayer, about someone you know who has displayed some impatience. I may be overly sensitive, given my experiences of the last 8 years. There have been stretches of time when I’m called into my boys’ school almost daily to deal with them, and I will admit, on approximately one out of those 50 or 60 or however many occasions, they have actually seen me angry and I wonder if someone sat in judgment on me that day. 😉

But the thought following immediately on that was that, I am regarded by many to be among the most patient people they’ve ever met. I have a house FULL of boys, probably three of them with ADHD and Asperger’s, and I’m generally pretty calm. …and there are those who fault me for that.

The moral of the story being, I spend my life with these boys who often behave badly, knowing I can’t win. If I’m stern, there’s going to be someone talking about how I’m not kind and loving enough, and if I’m patient and kind and loving, there are going to be plenty of others whispering about how my boys would behave if I would just discipline them.

But my overall thought, yes, please, please please pray for me, pray for my boys, pray for the people who sit in judgment on me (which in my case is my own family). My boys are perfect angels compared to what the boy in this book I just started reading, is telling about the things he did. And yet raising the two of them has been more difficult than raising the other 7 combined. Unless someone has been there, it’s hard to imagine how difficult some days can be, trying to get through to a child like this, trying to find anything at all that reaches them, and knowing the whole time that you will be judged harshly by those who have never lived it, never done it, never experienced it, but somehow feel they know. 😦

You know what, I didn’t think of it as venting, but now I can see my frustration coming out on the paper. Short version: Our son is adopted and the doctor ‘labeled’ him a Downs Syndrome baby, though he didn’t look like one, and that he should go into an institution. Well, I would have none of that, and when he was nine days old, we took him home. The doctor said he would monitor his development and I was prepared to give him any professional care he would need, love, and a home. In school he had behavior problems. I was called into school often and among what I was told was, “Ma’m, do your job.” I went to parenting classes and we began counseling with the instructor. He was tested for ADHD and I was told he didn’t have it. I still believe the diagnosis was wrong. I learned effective discipline and struggled to put them in practice. The adoption agency-Catholic Charities-in interview mentioned that spanking was not recommended, but use time-out or take-away privileges when necessary. I didn’t spank, but it is not in my nature to do so. Our son has been married for 3 years and they are expecting their first child in March. The posts above I will hold in my heart. God bless you all.

Thank you, that helps, and I understand completely. Exactly my feelings. Congratulations to your son and daughter in law! 🙂

I suppose it’s sad that my past experiences made me wonder.

My Grandson is Autistic , most of his behaviour is not ‘‘bad behaviour’’ but Autistic behaviour which he cannot help but many people think he is being badly behaved when he freaks out in the shopping centre because he cannot handle bright lights , noise , crowds and unfamiliar places

He is distressed not naughty!

We get dirty looks , disapproving looks , tutts , comments like he needs more discipline and he has even been told to shut up by a stranger when he is making his ‘‘sounds’’ because he can’t talk

Well I say make your sounds little man , you are verbalising and expressing things in your own way , we will not put you through any unneccesary distress for our own good , not yours , we can take it in turns to shop as you hate it and the whole experience distresses you deeply as we do not want to cause you to suffer , be yourself little man , do not let anyone judge you because you have a heart of gold and are such a sensitive soul who never judges others even though you are often judged for your Autistic behaviour , just be yourself little man! 😃

I am so sorry to have bordered on autistic children. I love how beautifully you have described them as wonderfully made by God and yes they are. My apology for shadowing the distinction. I was reliving my own experience of the choices my son made in school. My son and 4 other boys got into the teacher’s desk-with 5 days left in the school year-took rubber bands and paper clips and began shooting them at the girls. For this, all 5 were expelled and could not go to that school the following year. God bless you and all caregivers of autistic children. You are in my prayers as well.
